There's not much to report today. It got a bit warm yesterday and we have had no overnight snowfall unfortunately. If you've been skiing for a while it's a good rest day! The parks at Hirafu and Hanazono should be a good place to check out today as well. We also saw slight snowfall yesterday, but minimal. It did also get a bit warm and then re-froze overnight which could lead to some bad snow on S facing aspects.

It's also a pretty good day to get out on the snowshoes or skins and explore the backcountry around here. Please make sure you have proper gear and some training if you are going that route. Since it is supposed to get warm today, wet slides (very heavy snow) could be a reality. These are generally more troublesome since the snow is heavier. It is not fun to be buried under a wet slide.

The forecast isn't looking that great. We are supposed to get some warm weather over the next 2-3 days and then possibly - hopefully - a low pressure system dumping a lot of snow. We will see, but it looks promising. Let's all cross our fingers and get some vitamin D from the sun today. Who says you can't have a drink before noon?

Grand Hirafu / Hanazono:
Top - 420cm
Bottom - 220cm

Niseko Village:
Top - 470cm
Bottom - 240cm

Annupuri:
Top - 470cm
Bottom - 230cm

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko Base 6am: -1C, slight snowfall in the past 24 hours. No new development of snowdrifts. Coastal data: SSE4m/s at Benkei cape, 1.4m waves and 1018hPa at Kamui cape. Annupuri peak: W2.5m/s, -8.7C. Moiwa peak: -3C, no development of snowdrifts and calm wind.
Snowfall transition: New snowfall is almost non-existent under 800m altitude. The surface has melted and frozen again. Some snowdrifts have developed above 1100m due to strong westerly wind. The snowpack is stable. The weather is forecasted to turn bad quickly as the low-pressure system passes east.
Hazard evaluation: Surface slab avalanche risk is continuously present in typical avalanche terrain such as the Backbowl (E6), Osawa (F5), corinice slopes of Higashi-One (H7-G8), Yu no sawa (G3, strictly off-limits) and Haru no taki (J4, strictly off-limits). New snow is almost non-existent and some crusty surface can be found in the trees. Beware of falling/hitting trees. Do not enter strictly off-limits for any reasons. Mizuno no sawa program has ended and the area is closed for the season.
The wind is forecasted to pick up in higher altitudes (1100m). Peak gates are scheduled to open at 9:30, however may close depending on the weather. Low visibility to be expected as the weather comes in. Ask for the ski patrol’s advice at the gates.
