Yesterday remained clear and sunny througout the day to round off what was a very dry and sunny February. It was the 3rd sunniest Feb on record. You'd have to go back to 1972 to have experienced a sunnier Feb than this one. In terms of snowfall it was the 5th lowest on record receiving only 142cm down in Kutchan and a little over 2m up on the mountain. You'd have to go back to 1990 for a Feb that received less snow. Plenty of resorts around the world would probably be reasonably happy with 2m of snow just in Feb but up here that's only around half the average. So after what was an above average and epic Jan February was certainly a bit of a disappointment unless of course you love skiing in sunshine!

This morning is overcast and there's been some very light snow falling. The heavier snow is not expected until later this afternoon. So conditions today aren't the best. The sun yesterday will have created a crust on any slopes in direct sunlight and with no new snow it's pretty tracked out up there. Possibly a few patches of good snow still to be found out through the gates in more protected gullies but that's about it. Snowfalls are expected to continue right through to the weekend so conditions will improve.

Grand Hirafu:

Avalanche Information:

All gates are scheduled to open from the morning, peak gates at 9:30, but subject to weather conditions. Please respect the ski patrol's decisions. Annupuri peak 6am: -10.6 ℃, average wind SW 12.3m / s. Annupuri 800m: - 8.1 ℃, SE 4m / s. New snowfall is almost non-existent. The South to SW wind that started yesterday evening picked up during the night and stagnated around 15m / s in high elevation areas. This wind scuffed the snow off of some south facing steep slopes' surfaces. Slopes in high elevation are also rugged, hard and crusty, highly affected by the 28th's strong wind. Although the general avalanche risk is now lowering, the mountain is in a relatively foul condition. The visibility is poor. Remain in control and be careful not to loose your way. Avalanches are not the only dangers in the out of bounds area, be conscious of the risk you're taking, be prudent and enjoy within your limits.
