There isn't much to report snow wise this morning. A very light dusting came in last night but little to no accumulation was seen.

The New Year's hustle and bustle probably was the main focus of attention last night. Plenty of funny stories and gossip to go around. There will be no shortage of funny stories going around the bars over the coming weeks.

The temps are getting warm and we are seeing mild wind. Please keep in mind this layer will be a recipe for avalanches if we get a large snowfall on top of it. I hope everyone has a great New Year and a safe one at that!

For those following that info we posted previously about the snowfall in Kutchan.... the snowfall for December 2011 ended up being 349cm. That number was 201cm in December 2010 so you can see the difference there and the snowiest since 2005 and certainly more than the last few years. Nice. Still not as impressive as 1969 when there was a massive 587cm recorded.

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu / Hanazono:
Top - 290cm
Bottom - 150cm

Niseko Village:
Top - 260cm
Bottom - 170cm

Annupuri:
Top - 265cm
Bottom - 170cm

Official Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -6℃, light dusts in the past 12hours.
Coastal data: SSE4m/s at Benkei cape, 1.4m waves 1018hPa at Kamui cape.
Annupuri peak wind: SW9.7m/s.
There are no snow clouds around Niseko area and the atmospheric pressure gradient is shelving.
Development of cornices and snowdrifts cannot be observed and the avalanche risk is low.
Peak gates 2, 3 and 6 are scheduled to open at 9:30am.
Most slopes are tracked out, remain in control and beware of hitting trees.
Gate no.8, located next to the Annupuri gondola (250m NW of coordinate G4), is opening today.
Please refer to the gates’ descriptions on the Niseko Rules flyer.
Happy New Year.
