It's a very early report this morning as I will be out for the day...

Yesterday brought us a lot of unexpected sunshine! It was a miraculous day with great snow, amazing light, and smiles all around. Today seems like it will be another sunny one with intermittent clouds. There aren't many days to get out and do the big backcountry tours like Yotei and Shirabetsu, but today would definitely be the day. I know I am going to take full advantage of the light.

The winds don't look to be too bad, overall the day should be very nice.

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu / Hanazono:

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -6C;, 10cm of crystal snowfall since pre-dawn.
Coastal data: NW11m/s at Benkei cape, 1.0m waves and 1019hPa at Kamui cape.
Annupuri peak: wind WNW6.9m/s, temp. -13.6C;.
Snowfall transition: WNW11m/s or lower wind stagnated in the past 12 hours. Development of snowdrifts above 800m altitude is small, the snowpack is rounding and stable. A surface hoar layer is forming as Jan 17th layer.
Hazard evaluation: General avalanche risk is low.
Gates opening: Peak gates 2, 3 & 6 are scheduled to open at 9:30am.
Caution: Every skier & snowboarder must be conscious that the sports they practice involves many danger, especially greater in the out of bounds areas. Overconfidence in own skills could ultimately become a critical factor in areas with high natural hazards. Better be prudent and humble when facing the nature. Beware of hitting trees and collapsing cornices. The snow is a bit shallow but good overall conditions throughout the mountain.

Evening update:

The backbowls were rumored to have some fresh tracks today. With no new snow over night and increased visibility, it was one of those "get after it" days. We started climbing Yotei at about 7am and it was a pretty awesome day. Despite the 150KM per hour winds up top, the run down the main S face gully was fresh and surfy powder the whole way down. It was truly an amazing day.

It looks like it will be relatively clear again tomorrow and should start snowing by the end of the week again.
