Good morning again from Hirafu.

After a really nice day yesterday with sun and blue sky as well as some cloud, it's another lovely morning here. with clear skies and the sun shining down on us. There's some wispy white clouds hanging on here and there, but mostly blue skies.

It's a cold start to the day, but there's no new snowfall to report.

Over to the latest forecasts and we can see that tomorrow should be another sunny day like today and on both days temperatures may get to rise into positive numbers. But hopefully remain low numbers! After that, snow at the weekend? But it doesn't look like anything major.

A look back at our reports and as you can see from the numbers displayed below, we have recorded 281cm of snowfall here in Hirafu since the beginning of the season:

109cm snowfall in the last 7 days
158cm snowfall in December 2013
281cm snowfall since the beginning of the season

Here's the same numbers from December 18th 2012:

44cm snowfall in the last 7 days
226cm snowfall in December 2012
344cm snowfall since the beginning of the season

You can keep an eye on these numbers on each of our reports, towards the bottom of the pages. And of course there's all of the archives going back to 2002.

Until tomorrow!

Niseko Avalanche Report

Niseko base 6am: -3C, no snowfall, calm morning. Coastal data: ESE6m/s, 1.9m waves, 1023hPa. Annupuri 1000m snowdepth 110cm. A thin layer of fresh snow is present in 500m altitude, but no notable snowdrift development can be observed in all altitude levels. The general avalanche risk is low. Today’s surface will re-crystalize due to sun-exposure and temperature change and form a notable Dec 16-17th layer in the future snowpack.

Avalanche accidents mostly occur in leeward snowdrifted slopes during stormy weather. Today’s weather is calm and the snowpack is stable, however hard slab avalanches are still likely to occur in wind-affected steep slopes above 1100m.

Avalanches occur when the conditions allow, and do not necessarily depend on the snowfall amount. Winter mountains are never 100% safe, always remain prudent. Do not duck ropes to seek fresh tracks. Those casual bad habits simply increase the chance of accidents to happen. All skiers and snowboarders of all nationality and all experience level must equally respect the Niseko Rules when skiing in here. These rules are the backbone of Niseko’s characteristics to freely ski the out of bounds area. Niseko Rules & map flyers are available in Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean language. Request these flyers at Niseko Town Office if they can't be found near you.

Fresh snow will come soon.
