Quite cold this morning after another relatively clear night getting down to -14 in Kutchan. Only about 5cm of fresh snow since last report which is definitely not enough to fill in previous days tracks. So it will be getting fairly tracked out on the mountain currently. This morning has been snowing lightly but we really need another big fall to get things back into normal awesome conditions. Currently it looks like a good system will cross the region tomorrow night into Friday with the sort of snowfall amounts we need. The snowfalls should continue into the weekend making for a great end to the Chinese New Year holiday period.
At this stage next week isn't looking that great. A large area of low pressure at high latitude will push the Siberian high south and much milder air will be directed over Hokkaido. Hopefully though as the low moves out in the Sea of Okhotsk and the winds switch around to more colder northerlies again the system could produce very substantial snowfalls and see Feb go out with a real bang. Still a bit early to be definite about how it will progess but we'll keep an eye on it.

Avalanche Information:

Niseko Avalanche Info No.64

Moiwa base 6am: -10℃, 5cm of fresh snow.
Coastal data: NW11m/s at Benkei cape, WNW7m/s, 1.0m waves and 1022hPa at Kamui cape.
Annupuri peak: NW12.5m/s, -16℃, good visibility.
The snow above 1000m has been reasonably reset.
Moderate wind and snow has persisted above 800m due to the cold air mass inflow caused by the mild winter weather pattern.
Some easily collapsible 20cm soft slabs have formed in certain spots. Beware of shallow soft slab slides in 40°slopes.
Yesterday’s tracks are remaining below 800m but the snow is in good condition, suitable for skiing.
If deep and heavy (60cm) snowdrifts are present in knolls, they are yet to be stable and could trigger a slide.
Avalanches occur in steep slopes with heavy snowdrifts. Beware also of 30°slopes with wind ripples.
Many skiers dropping into the same slope at the same time could stimulate deeper layers and slabs, leading to a major slide.
According to data evaluation and observations, there are no notable signs of avalanche hazards, but always keep in mind that the mountain is never 100% safe.
Peak gates are scheduled to open at 9:30.
Seek for ski patrol’s advice before stepping out the gates.
