Sorry about missing yesterdays report but I had to head down to Hakkodate for the whole day.

The night before last saw the approach of a warm front and there was heavy wet snow for a couple of hours ahead of the front. After the passage of the front things warmed up considerably and the snow turned to rain which didn't last too long. Yesterday the winds started to turn around to the north in the afternoon and strengthened to gales with snowfalls. By early evening blizzard conditions prevailed across most of the island. The drive back from Hakkodate became fairly epic with roads progressively getting covered in large drifts. As we approached Niseko many roads were nearly blocked by the drifts forming. The storm continued throughout the night with more than 40cm of snow falling and some huge drift development up on the mountain.

Currently it's still snowing lightly and the winds are moderating but many higher lifts remain on wind hold including the gondolas at Niseko Village and Annupuri, although they should be able to open later. The massive drift development has obviously made the avalanche danger very high and all gates will remain closed today. The snow should clear later today.

Mild weather is still expected over the next few days so make sure you get up there today to enjoy what may be some of the last deep turns of the season.
