After the cool and rainy June/July the first couple of weeks of August finally warmed up and remained mostly fine. We even just cracked 30 degrees giving us the warmest day of the summer. In the latter half of the month though cloudy and rainy weather returned. Overall not the greatest summer up this way, especially with rain falling on many weekends.
The change of seasons are nothing if not abrupt in Hokkaido and like clockwork when September started so did a sudden drop in temperatures. During the last week an almost typical winter situation developed with a large high over Siberia and low pressure in the Sea of Okhotsk directing cool North Westerly winds over the island. The air was just cold enough for the first dustings of snow to fall across the higher peaks in central Hokkaido stirring up a little excitement for the season to come.
Around Niseko the first colours of autumn have started to appear, the farmers are harvesting the remaining summer crops and of course everyone is starting to speculate about how much snow we'll get this year. All I know is that after 3 years in a row of below average snowfalls we're certainly due for a big one, here's hoping anyway.
Over the coming weeks the forests around Niseko will be transformed into vivid colours and the first snowfalls will start to cap the summit of Mt Youtei making it one of the most beautiful times of the year to be in the region. We normally get our first frosts in the valleys around the 2nd week of October and the first snows at village level in the first to second week of November.
As we get closer to the season I'll update these reports more frequently and certainly after any notable early snowfall events.
