Morning from Niseko.

We did get some sunshine yesterday morning, it turned into a cracker weather wise. Very nice.

There's no fresh snow to report this morning and all the resort areas appear to be opening as planned.

The day has started mostly cloudy but again it looks like the sun might just break through.

Next fresh snowfall? Tomorrow perhaps. Fingers crossed!

---

There is an obviously frustrated message from the Niseko Avalanche folk this morning though - see below.

Unfortunately some people come here and seem to think that 'their rules apply', rather than the other way round. All I want to say is that if you are visiting, please remember that you are the visitor. I don't know any specific stories but it's particularly disappointing to hear that apparently some people who are based here (even doing business here?) and really should know better and be co-operating are being naughty in this respect.

---

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -4℃, no snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -6℃, moderate northerly wind, no snowfall. Hirafu 1250m: -8℃, strong northerly wind, no snowfall. Sea of Japan Kamu cape lighthouse: ENE6m/s, 999hPa, 1.1m waves.

A moderate NE wind is blowing, however no snow has fallen and according to observations, the general avalanche risk is low. All gates will open, however the out of bounds area is tracked out. Be careful.

Too many people are crossing boundary ropes and stepping into strictly off-limits areas to seek fresh tracks. Although, we feel sorry about anyone getting hurt, seeing people not caring at all about entering strictly off-limits areas is reaching the end of the ski patrol’s patience. Using day passes as a measure to avoid having long-term passes confiscated, and thinking it’s ok to duck ropes as long as you’re not being seen by ski patrol. Such a wrong idea to think that you’re allowed to do whatever you want in a small mountain in a small country in the far east.

People who deny the Niseko Rules and talk about introducing the western system seems to have no idea that this Rules is a rare case that strikes a balance between the freedom and safety of ski resort users. Disagreeing with it is pure ignorance. Is there any just reason why you shouldn’t respect Japanese regulations? Accommodations and tourism related operators also have the duty and responsibility to correctly explain the Niseko Rules to their guests.
