The temperature yesterday after the mild start got down around -5 and it has stayed there. Light snow has been falling on and off and up to around 5cm has fallen since last report. Conditions are hardly epic out there but they are good and the snow is dry. The winds have abated a little and all lifts are open today but the wind has been whipping up significant drifts on lee slopes and avalanche danger is still reasonably high and the peak gates will remain closed today. Still out in the bowls there should be good snow and a little deep in areas that have received drifting. So overall not bad but also not exactly waist deep with face shots every turn either. At least we seem to have dodged the rain that is hitting some resorts further south. Similar conditions are expected throughout the rest of the week.

Avalanche Information:

Niseko Avalanche Info No.57

Moiwa base 6am: -6℃, slight overnight snowfall.
Coastal data: NW10m/s at Benkei cape, W8m/s, 2.2m waves and 1015hPa at Kamui cape. The wind at sea is picking up.
The wind at Annupuri peak is predicted to pick up around 15m/s NW at noon.
Hirafu patrol reported W25m/s, poor visibility at the peak at 7am.
Snowdrifts are developing in leeward slopes above 800m, up to 120cm below the ridgeline at 1000m.
According to the weather transition until this morning, the snow is starting to stabilize, however 60cm avalanche is still to be highly considered in knolls and 40°slopes.
The risk will remain high in the morning in Higashi-One, Kozan no Sawa, O-sawa cornice slopes and Mikaeri no Sawa. Predicted trigger layer is Feb 9th.
Gate 3 (Hirafu peak) will be closed today.
Gates 2, 4 & 6 are scheduled to open at 10:00, but peak hike from gate 2 will be restricted.
Listen to the ski patrol’s instructions at the gates.
Do not cut across cornice slopes and knolls as it could trigger a slide.
Do not remain in gully bottoms (avalanche path).
Beware of crevasses, they are difficult to see from above.
Please respect the Niseko Rules in order to keep the freedom of riding and the minimum safety of all skiers.
