Another mostly fine morning with sunny breaks in Niseko. We're really not used to seeing the sun this much in the winter months! Some cloud did move in yesterday afternoon with a little light snow but it amounted to barely a dusting. The winds have remained light and the snow pack has settled well and avalanche danger today is relatively low and all gates will open.
Beware of a sun crust on exposed south facing slopes.
I'm sure many of us have been watching the updates on snow-forecast for the possible rain event this Friday. It's been switching back and forth between lots of rain to lots of snow to near nothing with every update. Obviously the exact path of the low will make a big difference whether there'll be lots of snow or any rain and the path is very difficult to forecast from a long way out. The latest update has the freezing level getting just above the base of the mountain with large amounts of snow to fall. Obviously whatever happens the precipitation will get a little wet at the base but in the week to follow temps should progressively get colder as the low moves to the north of Hokkaido and strengthens. I'm hopeful this low will remain fairly stationary up north for some time and we should see at least a week of a classic winter synoptic set up with a deep low to our NE and a large high to the west. This will hopefully see cold and snowy weather to continue for much of the rest of Feb.
