Couldn't have asked for a lovelier day yesterday and the marvelous view of Lake Nojiri below almost took your mind off the slush under your skis and the students in racing bibs swarming the slopes. A southeast wind blew even warmer temperatures in overnight and today's conditions are fairly grim.

All lifts and gondolas in the area (Akakan, Akakura Onsen, Ikenotaira, and Suginohara) were stopped as of 9:15 due to gale winds. It was already 7º just past 9 a.m. in the Akakura Onsen area and raining. A great kind of day if you're a duck.

Some of those students, by the way, are future downhill racers, but most are on school trips and using the bibs in place of lift tickets. Schools usually arrange to pay ski areas in advance so that the lift ticket booths aren't swamped every morning. The kids will be on vacation through the rest of the ski season, lucky them.

It looks like the temperature will be dropping overnight and snow is forecast for tomorrow as a typical winter seiko totei (high pressure to the west, low to the east) trough moves into place. Snow tomorrow is a fair bet if the wind shifts to the west as forecast. Roads will likely ice up after today's rain. As of now, the forecast is for a bit of sun on Sunday, meaning the weekend won't be a total loss, and the weather folks are predicting lower temps and more snow Tuesday and Wednesday. Fingers crossed.

It's been one of the mildest winters on record. It usually doesn't snow much in Joetsu (City) anyway so there's nothing on the ground there, but even in downtown Myoko, where a meter or so ordinarily still remains at this time of year, the snow has evaporated. It must be a bit discouraging to get off the train at Myoko Kogen or Sekiyama, ordinarily a couple of the snowiest places in the Snow Country, and see nothing but bare ground, but there's still plenty of snow on the mountain. And, although you can't ski on it, snow remains in patches on Myoko until well after Golden Week.

I have to assume that, since snow depths have fallen everywhere around the Akakura area thanks to the rain, the folks at Suginohara have just forgotten to update (although their website says they updated at 8:39 a.m.).
