A lot of snow has fallen overnight; there's a lot of drifting, too, so it's hard to tell just how much, but I'll go with the official word of my newspaper deliveryman and occasional snowthrower repairman and say we got a meter overnight (this is a guy who can get heavy machines going just by laying hands on them, and he's not some old grizzly curmudgeon...pretty good teppanyaki cook, too. The kind of guy you believe when he says, "One meter."). Anyway, it's a lot of snow, enough to delay trains in the morning, with enough wind that you might want to check on operations (Akakan gondola, Suginohara No. 3 lift in particular).

The cracking that we've seen on slopes means that the Maruyama lift at Akakura Onsen is closed because of avalanche danger (they're officially saying it, too—good for them for being forthcoming). It's really hard to tell what conditions might be like outside the lift served areas, (because I haven't gotten out yet), but the wind-packed snow, and the very wet layer below, suggest that at least it might be hard going, at worst dangerous in some places. A little caution is advised today.

And it's colder, which accounts for the snow as well. Stay warm, and enjoy the new snow!
