As often happens in the mountains, the weather changed from one moment to the next yesterday, from blue skies to pea soup fog in mid-afternoon. By evening light snow was falling and five to 10 cm accumulated overnight.

Visibility is good under cloudy skies this morning and local roads are dry for the most part. There's nearly no wind and temperatures are around the freezing mark. The wind is supposed to pick up this afternoon, accompanied by either rain or light snow.

The weather chart shows high pressure to the west and low to the east. Sure enough, the forecast for the penultimate week of the season is still light snow and below freezing temperatures, at least through Sunday, so winter doesn't appear to be through with us yet.

The Myoko tourism association has now announced that Suginohara will close on March 29 rather than April 5. Suginohara's home page still indicates an April 5 closing date, but only the gondola is operating on weekdays. There are still plans to soldier on through Golden Week at Akakan according to the resort's home page, but it might be best to check back before making holiday plans. Many lifts are closed as the season winds to its close and most that are still running shut down half an hour earlier at the end of the afternoon.

Madarao and Seki have yet to update their info this morning.

Official resort snow depths:

Suginohara:
75cm
Ikenotaira:
80cm
Akakan:
155cm (at top)
Akakura Onsen:
105cm
Madarao:
115cm
Seki Onsen:
200cm
