Ah, a traditional Myoko New Year: the sounds of heavy metal in the early morning (plows, bulldozers, giant rotary blowers) and the round mounds of snow that others call automobiles. The biggest snowfall in at least two years overnight, with somewhere around a meter of snow on the ground, and it continues to fall. Yesterday the snow was a bit windpacked; today its still and the snow is powdery.

A word for those traveling to Seki Onsen in heavy snow: your reporter got stuck on the road for four and a half hours, and never got more than halfway up. When a police van in front of you smashes into a snow wall, then scrapes along somebody else's car and again blocks all traffic, you know you're in trouble. Be sure to have good gear or a good driver (and some good company if you do get stuck). One idiot without snow tires or chains, and any of the roads here can be blocked.

Happy New Year, everyone; it's a great start here in Myoko!
