My cheery satellite TV weather women were way off a few days ago; the possible 40cm mentioned turned into maybe 10cm at the base. Then it got sunny, but cold, so at least we had some pretty, feathery hoarfrost in the morning (just the thing you don't want to see between snowfalls, like avalanche producing bad—but pretty in the sun).

Almost makes me glad to be stuck at the desk all week doing endless stuff so that I can then go and play once the white stuff starts to fall. Not "if,"" definitely "when" the snow starts to fall, because it can turn around in an instant, right?

Actually, your Snow Japan weather report for Akakura (a good place to go) now does hava a lot of snow potential outlined ahead—no heavy snowman icons up yet. So hang on, kids; go wax your skis, You didn't do that last season, did you? It will make a whole new experience (end of pre-season public service message. Back to our regular reporting soon).

The official (planned) openings for the ski areas are:

Akakura Kanko Ski Area (Akakan): December 17
Akakura Onsen Ski Area: mid-December
Ikenotaira Ski Area: December 17
Myoko Suginohara: December 23
Madarao Kogen Ski Area: Pre-open December 10-11; full open December 16
Seki Onsen Ski Area: no official date posted for this year (December 1 last season)
Tangram Madarao: December 17

These dates are when they officially open, of course; if there's no snow, they won't be opening; if there's heavy snow, many will open earlier. We'll keep you posted!
