I see that my fellow reporters have all turned in treports for December 11, so out of guilt I feel I have to write something. Even if it's just, "It's a nice day here, but no new snow."

Well, it is a nice day, actually, if you like blue skies and sunlight patches of snow. This time of year I tend to want to see clouds rolling in, threatening us with precipitation (November we an do without the clouds, because it mostly means endless cold rain and gloom).. Right now there is a big bank of clouds out over the Japan Sea that looks like it could be promising, although we don't have any snow on the forecast until Tuesday at the earliest, and then again toward the end of next week.

Not great for the ski areas with the tentative openings coming up soon—but I always like to remind myself that we've had a few years where it looked like we might not have a white Christmas, but then it turns into a great season.

The official (planned) openings for the ski areas are:

Akakura Kanko Ski Area (Akakan): December 17
Akakura Onsen Ski Area: mid-December
Ikenotaira Ski Area: December 17
Myoko Suginohara: December 23
Madarao Kogen Ski Area: Pre-open December 10-11; full open December 16
Seki Onsen Ski Area: no official date posted for this year (December 1 last season)
Tangram Madarao: December 17

These dates are when they officially open, of course; if there's no snow, they won't be opening; if there's heavy snow, many will open earlier. We'll keep you posted!
