Hakuba currently is sitting under cloudy skies with the expected temperature rising throughout the day. New snow (albeit wet heavy snow) fell overnight with about 3-5 cm in the valley and 8-10 cm on the upper slopes. Packed and chopped powder conditions on the hill today and soft groomed snow on the main runs. High winds could be a factor today on the upper slopes with flurries expected in the afternoon and tomorrow.

Cloud cover for most of the day with a possibility of snow this afternoon.

Backcountry Travel Advisory:

The large snow fall over the new years has been settling and although there are still weak layers in the surface snow recent days have seen increased bonding occurring in the new snow. The rain crust of December 29th is also starting to bond to the new years storm snow, however, be careful around rocky outcrops and shallow snow pack areas where faceting may be occurring around the crust. There will still be stresses in the snow pack in convexing areas so do take caution on steeper complex terrain. Winds over the last week have created multiple medium sized cornices that are very fragile and easy to dislodge therefore take due care around corniced ares.

Be aware of temperature rises and direct solar radiation on slopes.

Compression tests in the Tsugaike area on a north facing start zone at 1900 metres produced very easy compressions at 20cms from the surface in the new snow over riding the new years storm snow. Moderate compressions were found with in the storm snow 50 - 60cms from the surface, many of the compressions from with in the storm snow were progressive compressions or breaks and would signify bonding. Mild temperatures should continue to support bonding.
