Good morning Sports Fans, and yet another snowing morning is greeting we of the Hime Kawa drainage.

The good news is the Snow Elf had to wade through 24 cm of medium density new snow to do the 0700 hr. reading.

The backcountry hazard has obviously change from previous days.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Driving conditions in the valley, especially where the ice is formed from stopping etc. and is now lubricated by this new snow, should be interesting.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m) the 0700 hr. reading is:
Sky: obscured
Temperature: Present: -2.0 C
Maximum: 0 C
Minimum: -5 C
Wind: calm
Precipitation: snowing such as to accumulate4 cm per hour (S 4)
Barometer and trend: 894 hPa (low) and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 24 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS):44 cm

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Hazard:
Above Tree Line: High

At Tree Line: High

Below Tree Line: Considerable

Discussion:
We have had 30 cm of new snow in the past 30 hours in the valley bottom. There are significant winds forecasted. The moderately dense new snow, high winds and warm temperatures has the potential to form significant hard slabs in all open areas. With these conditions human triggered avalanches are likely. Skier/ boarder triggered sluffs will pose a significant hazard in steep terrain, even at low elevations. Given the current weather forecast the avalanche hazard is likely to increase before it gets better.

Travel Advisory:
Shallow early season snowpack, poor visibility, and "high" avalanche hazard make for difficult backcountry travel decisions today. Staying in familiar, low consequence terrain will reap long term benefits. The threat of natural avalanches that can travel fast and far will increase throughout the day.
