A morning of broken cloud cover, mild slightly sub-zero temperature, barely perceptible wind, and not a snow flake falling. Don't hold your breath, but there is a hint of precipitation on Monday the fifth day of March. Yesterday's warm midday temperatures was instrumental in transforming the snow but the afternoons lengthening shadows rapidly re-cooled the snow surface, especially in the lower elevation areas. The air temperature is forecast to rise to 10 C this afternoon. Light winds from the various directions are forecast.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Broken clouds(more than 50% and less than 100% cloud cover)
Temperature: Present: -4.5 C
Maximum: 12.0 C
Minimum: -5.0 C
Wind at surface: Light from the north
Winds aloft: Light from north-west
Precipitation: Nil
Barometer and trend: 927 hPa and rising
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 64 cm
Foot penetration: 1 cm
Surface: Faceted crystals, 1.5 mm
Density of surface snow: not measured
Crust: 16 cm
Cloud ceiling: above 3,000 m a.s.l.

A Japanese Marten (Martes melampus) seems to be making a regular nocturnal patrol through the study plot.

Hazard:

Above tree line: Moderate

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Low

N.B. The hazard will increase with daily warming, especially with direct sunlight. Yesterday's significant (such that snow is transported) winds have probably loaded lee slope pockets.

Travel Advisory:
Yesterday many size 1 avalanches were observed running in the above tree line terrain. The triggers were variously solar, wind loading and human. Although nothing was observed that would completely bury a person the avalanches were quite capable of pushing a person into a less than advantageous situation (e.g. over a cliff, into a tree/rock at speed, into an open creek). Thus our usual attempt to describe a conservative "hazard rating" was possibly a tad bold with "moderate" above and at tree line.

All day yesterday there was wind transport of snow at ridge top, although the bulk of the snow appeared to be sublimating back into the ether. Above the Tsuga Ike Lift Company terrain there was from almost zero to 30 cm of snow shoe penetration up to 1,850 m a.s.l. depending on aspect and recent wind transport. Although the air temperature (Ta) rose to 0 C at 1,850 m a.s.l. at midday the snow on the north exposure was still quite powdery later on at 1,600 m a.s.l.
