This morning we woke to a fluffy silence. Not even the crash of a falling snow flake to mar the quiet. There was 25 cm of new snow (in 24 hours). Add that to the previous day's 17 cm. The driving in town is good (the plows have been busy) but a tad slick as could be expected with the temperatures wandering above and below 0C yesterday. Skiing in the upper areas of the lift serviced terrain was pretty good yesterday afternoon. Foot penetration of 70 cm have been reported. Although not the lightest snow (70 kg/cubic metre) there was no wind effect to speak of so there was a pleasant consistance in the untracked snow. The snow fall ceased late yesterday afternoon and it is settling quickly.

The forecast is for overcast skies today. But as I write this the sun is breaking through holes in the cloud cover and I can see up to the Happo One Lift Company terrain to the Virgin Cafe at 1,680 m a.s.l. There is fairly good visibility.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Broken clouds (50% or more but less than 100% cloud cover)
Temperature: Present: -3.0 C
Maximum: -0.5 C
Minimum: -3.5 C
Wind: Calm
Winds aloft: Appear calm
Precipitation: Nil
Barometer and trend: 920 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 25 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 97 cm
Foot penetration: 45 cm
Surface: New snow, size 1.5 mm
Density of surface snow: 75 kg/cubic metre

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Hazard:
Above Tree Line: High

At Tree Line: High

Below Tree Line: Considerable

N.B. Yesterday afternoon trained "avalanche observers" heard the sound of larger avalanches. The buried surface hoar is now even more deeply buried. Historically light to moderate skiing of terrain has proved to have little to moderate effect on controlling a buried surface hoar instability.

Travel Advisory:
Yesterday another 25 cm snow accumulated in the valley (and more up high). With settlement there is approximately 33 cm of storm snow (height of storm snow: HST). This is compared with the two days' accumulated HN24 of 42 cm. With the FP (foot penetration) of 45 and more there is obviously lots of snow available for transportation.

The story in a nut shell is that the snow is settling quickly, there has been little significant wind, the visibility is improving, the travel will be rather difficult and there are probably pockets of buried surface hoar lurking.

Happy trails buckeroos.
