Overnight there was no freeze at the lower elevations but above 1,400 m a.s.l. it probably froze a bit. the forecast is for a clearing trend toward the afternoon, a high of 11C in the valley with light winds from the west to north-west. At higher elevations the wind will probably be more in the "moderate" range. There is presently light showers in the valley. The lower areas of the Happo One Lift Company terrain is patchy for snow cover and lifts on the lower portion of the mountain are closed now.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Overcast
Temperature: Present: 4.0 C
Maximum: 2.0 C
Minimum: 11.5 C
Wind at surface: Very light from the west
Winds aloft: Light from the west
Precipitation: Raining
Barometer and trend: 912 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 40 cm
Water: 6 mm
Foot penetration: 1 cm
Surface: melt freeze crystals , 6 mm crystals, wet
Density of surface snow: not observed
Crust: 10 cm
Cloud ceiling: down to 1,200 to 1,400 m a.s.l.

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Considerable

Below tree line: Considerable

N.B. The hazard is heavily dependent on the degree of day-time warming and wind transport of any available snow(at higher elevations where it has not gone through a crust forming air temperature (as opposed to a direct solar created melt freeze)rise and fall).

Travel Advisory:
With a suspected moderate freeze above 1,400 m a.s.l. there are probably pretty good travel conditions (i.e. low ski penetration). Right now visibility in the main range is limited above 1,500 m a.s.l. With the forecast clearing and temperatures the hazard, especially in the isothermal snow pack will increase throughout the day. The cornices have not increased appreciably in strength so be aware of the threat from above, especially when you can't see it.
