A trace of fluffy new snow was observed this morning in the upper Hira Kawa valley. Some sort of a centimetre or more fell above the Tsuga Ike Lift Company terrain yesterday afternoon and more may have followed it during the evening. A ski-tour party is going there again today (same guide as yesterday) and will report observations.

The sky ths morning is a bit more than 50% covered in cloud ("broken cloud"). the forecast is for this to become overcast for the bulk of the day. In the valley bottom the temperatures arre forecast to be between -3C and 0C, with light west to north-west winds and no precipitation.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Broken clouds
Temperature: Present: -4.1 C
Maximum: 1.0 C
Minimum: -6.0 C
Wind: Calm
Winds aloft: Moderate (apparently) from the north-west
Precipitation: S -1
Barometer and trend: 919 hPa and rising slowly
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): Trace
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 65 cm
Foot penetration: 15 cm
Surface: new snow, size 2.0 mm
Density of surface snow: not enough to measure
Crust: breaking down under 3 cm of dry snow

Above Tree Line: Moderate

At Tree Line: Moderate

Below Tree Line: Low

N.B. Surface hoar is being found (down 20 or so cm) on northern exposures that usually reacts to compression testa as a "resistant planar "shear but occasionally it reacts as a "sudden planar" shear.

Travel Advisory:
the snow pack is generally settling well but please review yesterday's "Travel Advisory". The Avalanche Course senior instructor is particularly concerned with the variability of the buried surface hoar. The course participants have been digging lots of holes and done many many compression tests. There is something out
there. The south exposure crusts are breaking down slowly and there is definitely recrystallization taking place around these crusts. Right now this is not a major concern but a sudden heavy load increase could change this picture. Yesterday on lower angle south exposures above 1,800 m a.s.l. in the shade of coniferous trees the snow was still powdery and the skiing was good as long as you read the shade affect correctly. there was 35 cm foot penetration at 1,800 m a.s.l. on the north exposure.
