A bit of a rainy morning here in the Hakuba Valley.

It started raining here at about 5AM and it looks like it is going to be clearing up later this afternoon. With any luck it will cool down and this rain will turn to snow.

The snow is falling on the upper slopes, although it is going to be a bit wet and slushy up there. Expect some icy patches as the masses over the weekend really packed down the runs by just sliding. There is still good coverage on the upper runs and if you are looking for nice groomers, moguls or charging through crud, the conditions are pretty good for early season.

We are expecting some flurries to arrive near the end of this week on Thursday and Friday, this will definitely be needed to bring up the snowpack base and open the whole mountain. Until then skiers and snowboarders should download on the gondolas instead of skiing all the way down the runs, unless they don't mind a few nicks on their skis or board.

--------

Official snow depths and operations @ Monday 20th December AM:

Lower slopes - 10cm.
The Gondola, Alpen quad, Kurobishi quad, Panorama pair lift, Skyline No2, Hakuba Kokusai No 3 Pair AB lifts are operating and the upper slopes open.

Upper - 35cm
Lower - 5cm
Iwatake is now part open. The Gondola as well as the View No 3 pair lift, Iwatake No 4 pair lift and Kamoshika No 4 pair lifts are operating - you need to get the Gondola back down the mountain.

Hakuba Minekata and Hakuba Sanosaka plan to open for the season on 23rd December.

Later update:

Well, the rain has stopped and it is now partially sunny in Hakuba. With the sun coming through the clouds the temperature has risen a little and the visibility has gotten better too!

The snow might be a bit wet and slushy up there. Expect some icy patches as the masses over the weekend really packed down the runs by just sliding. There is still good coverage on the upper runs and if you are looking for nice groomers, moguls or charging through crud, the conditions are pretty good for early season.

Looking forward to the forecast snow, hopefully starting around tomorrow night into Wednesday morning...
