Yesterday's good visibility is an almost forgotten dream this morning. In the Hime Kawa valley the cloud ceiling is enshrouding the top of the ski-jump at the Happo One Lift Company. You can see across the valley, but just. the good news is that it is snowing steadily at about one centimetre per hour (S1). This precipitation is forecast to continue so till late in the afternoon. No great winds seem associated with this precipitation.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Overcast
Temperature: Present: 1.0 C
Maximum: 9.5 C
Minimum: -6.0 C
Wind at surface: Calm
Winds aloft: Unobserved
Precipitation: Snowing at the rate of one centimetre per hour accumulation (S1)
Barometer and trend: 910 hPa and falling rapidly
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 4 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 77 cm
Foot penetration: 15 cm
Surface: Faceted fragments, New snow in damp clumps with well rounded crystals
Density of surface snow: not measured
Crust: not measured (below new snow)
Cloud ceiling: Ground

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Low

N.B. the below tree line hazard may increase if the daily warming is sufficient. The lower elevation snow pack is isothermal and may react to a slight increase in temperature especially on steep solar radiation effected slopes (even through cloud cover the sun has an affect).

Travel Advisory:
Poor visibility may hamper travel aspirations although the warming yesterday has done much to reduce the ski-penetration. The lower elevation height of new snow may be significantly greater with elevation as this precipitation event started yesterday evening as rain in the valley bottom.
