After the earthquake to our south in the Tohoku region of Japan yesterday afternoon, I am sure many of you are wondering how things are going at the Furano Ski Resort.

I am happy to report that everyone here in Furano and the surrounding area is safe and sound, and there has been no real damage to report. When the quake hit, everything shook for a minute or so, but we appear to have fared far better than our neighbors to the south.

In weather related news, it has been snowing off and on, intensely at times, building up our base by an extra 20cm, which is welcome news this late in the season. We are currently at 150cm for the official totals, and there is plenty of fresh powder laying around on those slopes. Due to the earthquake, the High School National Invitational Ski Competition has been cancelled in the middle of the competition, meaning that the Spies Course, the setting for the crace, will be reverting back to normal use.

It's currently a balmy 1 degree, but expect those temperatures to fall a few below freezing for the overnight hours, with snow off and on throughout the night, exactly the same as we have been seeing all week. It seems winter is just not ready to give up it's hold on Central Hokkaido as of yet. Tomorrow afternoon should warm up to well above freezing, so we will see how long this cold can last.
