Feels melty out there today.

The forecast rain did not eventuate I don't think. It was due at 6am and I was up to check but there was no precipitation. If I missed it, it must have been light.

Things do feel melty here though, and it was 2.5 degrees Celsius on my verandah at Kitanomine at 8.30am.

The television news weather predicts Furano will reach 4C which is warm for December.

On the resort, the groomed piste is still in good condition and the side country is still light and dry, but if it stays warm for too long this could change. Stay tuned.

For me it is all about slush underfoot. I am not a fan. Right now the roads are a bit slushy, which is safer for driving than ice and I am not complaining. Importantly, the footpaths are still snowpack. Much nicer for walking. If that changes I will be complaining loudly.

The television news forecast also calls for snow at 3am and 6am, but if they are right it follows rain at midnight. I doubt I will witness any of those events but in the morning I will tell you what is on the ground and falling from the sky, promise.

No wind today which adds to the mild feeling. Mostly blue sky directly upwards, but clouds on all horizons. The resort is sunbathed right now but by the time I press upload this may have changed. Our microclimate likes to mix it up in Furano.

Resort still reporting the snow base as 105cm at the top and 60cm at the bottom. Sounds about right, but I think the bottom will be compacting and becoming denser and wetter if we do not get snow soon.

Looking at the synoptic chart and its swirly crystal ball, heavy snow is not likely for about a week in my opinion. But it's the weather so let's wait and see.

On the up side, these are uniquely good snowman making conditions. I have tried and failed for many winters to make snow people out of Central Hokkaido snow and it is a very poor building medium usually. But now that it's a little warmer and a little denser down here below the mountain, I think this should be my priority.

Photo 1 is the resort from Furano JR Train Station at about 9am today.

Photo 2 is the view from the very base of the Kitanomine gondola building just before then.
