Readers name : snowbeaurd
Date Visited : FEB 17-18
Snow Condition : FEB 17 - Heavy Snow, FEB 18 - Sunny and Warm!
PROS : Unreal powder runs, no lines, cheap deals, great park!
CONS : Smallish, with 6-7 lifts, lots of beginners
Review : Hey just got back from an AMAZING two days at Yuzawa Park, right after the long long tunnel in Niigata.

The first day was snowy, with tons of powder. Sadly, a few days before we went it had rained, creating a layer of ice about 15cm under the freshie.

Regardless, snow conditions were near perfect. The best powder runs are off the highest two lifts. Off the (facing the mountain) top left lift, go left and traverse as far as you can, then cut into the trees for mostly untouched fluffy stuff. On the highest lift on the right-hand side of the mountain, go left (where there "should" be an OB sign), and jump into the best run at the Park.

Also recommended: The boardercross-esque humps to the right of the big jumps.

Finally, we got a ¥7,000 package with two-day lift passes, one night in their "Sportsman's Lodge" dormitory, and two big meals.

Enjoy!

Snow Condition : Slightly soft.
PROS : Enough challenges for one day of skiing, empty
CONS : 2 lifts shut down, snow not great
Review : This is the second time I've been to this resort. I'd say I was only an intermedaite skier, and nothing here was deeply difficult. Though, two lifts to a hard slope were shut down, due to low capacity. That was the best part! Empty, empty empty on a weekday. The first time I went here was my first and only attempt so far at snowboarding, and the weekday emptiness was perfect for a beginner! Perfect for a beginner to intermediate skier/snowboarder, good for one day of interest to an intermediate level skier.

Snow Condition : Good
PROS : Cheap
CONS : Nice and small
Review : Overall I had fun here, the snow park was great fun - 2 rails and 3 jumps all laid out so you could hit them all. Not much in the off piste area except if you hike up the mountain from the top lifts it's possible to get a short and gnarly run in before you have to worm your way through the trees.

There are a lot of beginers here, and also it's a really great deal as from the moment you check in to the hotel they give you a lift ticket, so we paid 7500 yen for 1 and a half days skiing plus night skiing, and 2 meals and accomodation. I only wish every resort in Japan had deals like that.

It would get boring there if you were there for 3 days or more. But for a short trip it is surely worth it.

Date Visited : Sunday 2/15/2004
Snow Condition : Morning - ice / Afternoon - fresh snow
PROS : Not very crowded
CONS : Very short courses
Review : I've tried this Sunday to take advantage of the one-day trip offer with the Shinkansen to go for some snowboarding. I took the cheapest plan I could find, which was for Yuzawa Park (10,800yen including the lift tickets)

It is said "what you pay is what you get". This could be applied for Yuzawa Park.

The courses were really short, the longest lift is just 550m. If you actually tried to speed up a bit you would run out of course in less than a minute.

Another problem that I encountered was that there were many newbies, and although it was snowing all day, no fresh snow was gathered on the courses cause all the learners just kept on pushing it away by pointing the board vertical to the slope.

Things changed in the afternoon and during the night skiing. The courses emptied and new fresh snow started gathering. By 6 in the evening the snow conditions were very good with even some fresh powder gathering in some parts.

The night lights were open also in the advanced course, which also had a small artificial ramp that you could catch some air! In general during the afternoon I had fun, although I was a bit disappointed that the course was short (about 700m at its longest part).

Closing arguments: It is not a bad place to go for a one day trip but definitely not a place to stay there for 2-3 days.

Snow Condition : Sweet, not powder, but not heavy or icy either
PROS : Some interesting runs
CONS : No big challenges
Review : This place is very similar to Nakazato - in fact they are pretty much right next door to each other. And so it has a very similar feel to it. Nice, cute runs with some moderately hairy tree runs, a small park with a single rail and booter, and the sweetest freestyle run I have drpped in to. This run is actualluy a tube-ride run. When the tube ride isnt operating, you can board it. Plenty of banks to slam and some nice drops to spin off. Not for the hardcore, but not too bad either.

Review : Small family resort about 10 minutes bus ride from the station at Echigo Yuzawa. If you are a family of beginners then you might like this place, but if you are looking for a challenge, then other resorts in this town will suit you better.

They have a little area for small children where they can play in safety and our toddler really liked that.

Fun tube run too (sit in a big rubber tyre and get pushed down a slope course) - good fun.

So a decent small family suitable resort fairly close to Tokyo.

Review : Small place opposite Iwappara, and not as busy (even though that place didn't look busy either!). We stayed at Asahikan just near the bottom of the slopes - very friendly and good advice about where to ski. We are a family with 2 small children and so Yuzawa Park was well suited to us - there are no real difficult slopes around.

Thank you for this site and all the wonderful information you provide. We really appreciate it.

Review : A few years ago, Yuzawa Park quickly became a very popular resort for snowboarders, allowing them on all of its slopes a little earlier than other resorts did. A pretty resort set opposite the larger Iwappara, Yuzawa Park is still quite popular and provides some decent, if not
short, slopes to get some practice in, in nice surroundings. Easier slopes
predominate, with the "Family" course being one of the more popular, with its 14 degree maximum slope. Those looking for more of a challenge will want to take lift number 3 and 6 to the more challenging slopes featuring moguls (but very short runs).

Review : This place was one of the first that allowed snowboarders, and when all the others didn't it got real popular with the boarding crowd. Now that almost everywhere lets boarders on the hills, this place is often deserted.

A small resort with about 6 lifts, it's pleasant enough. Probably best suited to families and beginners.

Near Iwappara in Yuzawa town.

Review : This was my first EVER time to a snowfield and if anyone is in that situation then this is your place. It's perfect for beginners and easy to get to from Tokyo. The only downfall is that half of Tokyo will be there with you. I've been on weekdays - hate to see it on the weekend. Regardless, I had great times during the 2 trips I've had there and it's given me the opportunity to get a taste of snowboarding, and I'll be forever in its debt.
