Spring Soft to Slushy on the main track. Icy below. |

It was open. Great views from the top. |

The courses are all roped off and angled across the slopes. |

The bottom field called Nunoba had no snow but would suit begnners nicely - a wide and even slope with two lifts.
The top field called Yuzawa Kogen suited the kids,(beginner skiers) but they enjoy being in the snow regardless.
There's a long and boring cat track around the back which they liked. I guess would offer some short drop offs in powder conditions.
Overall though it's not very challenging for the experienced skier / boarder, and the courses are all on weird traverses. |

This resort was better than I thought it would be.
It's not big, but there's a decent main run that has a fast power lift going up there.
It was not busy at all - surprising for a Saturday - and we didn't have to wait once for a lift.
The snow was great too. And the views of Yuzawa from the very top are amazing. Take a camera and video on a blue sky day and you'll get some incredible pics.
The Curry Buffet for 950 yen is worth a try too. 8 different curries, eat all you want. You can really get your fill if you're hungry. |

2 places, the really small Nunoba right at town level. A few 100 meter lifts and accompanying runs...for beginners only.
And Yuzawa Kogen - go up the ropeway to the runs. Not that many but more difficult. YK joins up with GALA Yuzawa via a ropeway (and GALA in turn to Ishiuchi), making for a big space! |

A small but pleasant resort. Very quiet when we went(+1) -- in fact, seems almost like a well kept secret compared to some of its neighbours.
I hadn't skied for a while so the practice runs were useful to, well, practice. Seems about right for a half day's skiing. The best route the Panorama (a green) was very scenic and not really difficult.
Some of the black runs were exciting, but only merits half-a-day. |

We went here coz we got a deal with the train/ski lift ticket. We are beginner skiers so Nunoba - while very small - was ok for us to practice on before we took the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway up to the Yuzawa Kogen part of the resort.
This is more difficult and we were struggling a bit - the top looks difficult (but most slopes look difficult to us!) - so we took in the great scenery from up there and fairly quickly went back down.
If you like tonkatsu (fried pork cutlets), check out Ninjin (which is just opposite the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway bottom station. The best I have ever had (....and I have had a lot of tonkatsu). Highly recommended. |

Nunoba is the small "practice area" at the bottom of the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway that takes you up to the Yuzawa Kogen ski/board resort.
In itself it isn't too big. One decent run going right from the top to the bottom, with 2 lifts taking you there and some great views.
There is ropeway that links the resort up to GALA Yuzawa resort. GALA in turn is linked up to Ishiuchi Maruyama..... those 3 resorts taken together make up for a very large area to ski or board with a great variety of snow and courses.
You can busy a 3 resort ticket which is just nominally more than a 1 resort pass - but is definitely the way to go.

Go to Yuzawa kogen's if you want to:
1. escape the maddening crowds from its larger next door neighbour Gala
2. practice skiing or snowboarding and aren't looking for challenging slopes
Else, there's not much to keep the advanced skier/snowboarder interested for more than an hour or so.
The 2 black runs really should have been blue or red, but definitely not black.
It only got interesting when we ventured off the groomed runs into verboten "gerende" :) Don't tell anyone but turn off the top "black" run to the right (what no skiing sign?), and eventually, not too far down, you'll end up at the green run. Why keep such pretty powder and fun track closed to the public?!
I like skiing/boarding in Japan, and love the pow' but I hate the fact that they don't use the whole mountain as they do in the states, to name an example.
So to conclude, it's okay for a day trip IF you combine it with a combined mountain pass that gives you access to Gala and the other one next door, for 1500en or so more. Ski gala in the morning when it's not so crowded, and bail out to Yuzawa after lunch (I liked Gala's lunch options better by the way). bobu |
