Wide slopes and ski-in/ski-out |
| CONS : |
Smaller in scale than some other resorts in Japan |
| Review : |
I visited Naspa for the Chinese New Year Holidays with two young kids (age 3 and 5, my wife and a helper).
Great resort for a family since the slopes were literally behind the hotel building and were all very wide. There were plenty of ski intructors who could speak English and the whole place was just very family friendly and oriented (eg. play rooms, Pingu character coming out into the children ski slopes in the afternoon).
Although the resport is relatively small compared to say, Rusutsu in Hokkaido, with less to do in the evenings and less restuarants to choose from, I would still say its worth a visit if you have a young family since getting there from Tokyo is easy (80 mins. bullet train ride from Tokyo station) and once you are at the resort every thing is very convenient.
Main drawback? Perhaps a little too small with not too many slopes for more advanced skiers (which I am not) and the snow conditions are a bit unpredictable. We were lucky in that the first day there was a light drizzle which resulted in icy conditions and some sludge but then started snowing heavily during the next few days which plenty of fresh powder. We were told by one of the ski instructors that this was the best snow condition they had had so far that season so I guess the snow conditions are probably not as good as in Hokkaido - understandble given its close proximity to Tokyo.
All in all, a good and safe bet in terms of having a good family ski trip.
P.S. The qualilty of the food at the one and only Japanese restuarant in the hotel was outstanding on all three nights we stayed. |

If you are looking for powder go somewhere else (although you can find it here very long as no one else bothers). There are 3 lines but all are shortand not really challenging.
This is really a beginning family oriented resort.
They have a nice mogul run for beginning mogul skiers. |

Well groomed slopes, very warm in the afternoon |
| PROS : |
Not crowded, easy day trip from tokyo, family friendly |
| CONS : |
Expensive/ bad food |
| Review : |
We are beginner so the slopes were perfect for our family. I don't think there was a lot of challenge for the advanced skier (pretty small resort), but enough variety for beginners. We went on a holiday, but the slopes were not crowded and the wait for lifts was never more than a couple of minutes. The worst part of the day was the trip back which took almost 5 hours. I don't know if that is due to the holiday, or regular traffic from this area. I would do it again however and with 3 tired kids and 5 hour car trip, thats saying something. |

Skiers-only first class resort 1hr from Tokyo |
| CONS : |
Small, only a handful of relatively short wide runs |
| Review : |
This is a good place to learn and practice technique. Good rental shop and foreign instuctors. Beginner and intermediate runs are all extremely wide, perfect for those still doing "Z" turns. One day here would be enough as terrain is not very interesting and it can get crowded.
The NASPA hotel and service are first class and their ski plans are good values including meals and sports tickets. |

Good family ski resort, good snow, luxurious hotel |
| CONS : |
Not good if your wanting to board, as you're not allowed! |
| Review : |
NASPA is a skier only resort and very family-centered - not for hardcore dudes. But for the people its aimed at its a nice place. We went with 2 Japanese families for the day. The children had lessons in English (they have some New Zealanders there working in the ski school), and the adults just enjoyed a gentle day of skiing.
The snow was great - top conditions - and the weather was also really nice. Hardly anyone on the hills at all.
Very friendly staff, lovely hotel (but expensive). |

Our family went to NASPA for the recent long weekend. And what a wonderful time we had.
The resort is very much a place for families. Only skiing is allowed on the slopes, they have foreign ski instructors, and this season that penguin character Pingu is there (read : person in suit, but the kids loved him). The hotel is not cheap, but beautiful. The ski hill is not large but well laid out and we found it to be enough for the two days we were there. Recommended to families. |

Skiers?
Family?
Small children?
Want English lessons?
Want to stay in style?
(ie Got lots of money?!!)
NASPA is for you. They have 3 foreigners there this season teaching the kids while mom and pop can enjoy the skiing. We went last weekend and had a marvelous time.
Very easy to get to - just a 5 minute drive from the Yuzawa IC but out of the main part of the town, adding to the "exclusive" feeling the whole resort has. |

I am one of those people who still like to ski (not many left maybe!?).
My children want to learn skiing too, and they can't speak Japanese, so NASPA seemed like the perfect place to go to.
As a family we had a fabulous time at NASPA - the facilities are excellent, the staff friendly (some gaijin instructors), and they have a free shuttle bus going not only to the station but also directly to GALA Yuzawa (my snowboarding son liked that).
Highly recommended to skiers. Not recommended to boarders (duh!), to people looking for 10km runs and people wanting wild backcountry adventures. |

Good place for beginners as well as intermediate skiers.
Skied there 3 times, once on a weekday and twice on a weekend and the place never got too crowded, so you don’t have to wait in line for the ski lifts getting frost bites.
Not the longest courses around but definitely worth a visit especially if you want to bring your family along with kids. |

Great place for families with children and beginner/lower inter skiers. This is the only no boarders resort in Yuzawa town and the resort uses that as it's selling point.
This year they have some foreigners working there as ski patrol so you can take ski lessons in English.
There is also some plan they have for children with the Pingu penguin character.
A good day out. The hotel is gorgeous, but expensive. |
