| Snow Condition : |
Usually better than other lower resorts in the area |
| PROS : |
Big resorts, famous for backcountry and tree runs, cool patrol |
| CONS : |
Crowded, far |
| Review : |
I usually go to Kagura early in the season and late in the season.
Eearly because it's not crowded like it is usually and also because it's one of the first resort to receive big amount of snow. This year 2010, was unbelievable, there was so much powder in December, you couldn`t actually ride it unless you were on one of the steepest side of the mountain. Sometimes, not all areas are open (Tashiro usually opens later).
Late because it's also not crowded and it`s one of the last resort to close (it`s not unusual to go there until golden week !). They also start operating an additional lift from early March which leads you to one of my favorite run in Kagura.
The resort is big, you can easily stay 2 days there without getting bored especially if you take the Naeba ticket. The park is fun to take a break off the slopes or to have some fun before taking the gondola back to the parking.
Tashiro will be good for beginners (beside some flat parts which requires to have speed not to stop). |

Light Snow on the mid and upper slopes |
| PROS : |
Large resort with plenty of runs |
| CONS : |
Strong winds closed lifts and weekend crowds |
| Review : |
This was our first time to vist Kagura and we were up for a day trip from Tokyo which is easily possible if you take the early shinkansen. Be warned that if you go at the weekend you could find the shared changing facilities at Mitsumata base are cramped and queues build quickly for the lift passes and ski rental once the bus from Echigo Yuzawa arrives. I saw some rental shops just across the road from the car park which although not as convenient, did not appear to be as busy. The ropeway to the lower slopes are quick and efficient.
We would have liked to ski over to Tashiro but the winds picked up by lunchtime and a number of the lifts were closed down which left the slopes that were open with long lift queues. There was a light dusting of fresh snow which helped compensate for the crowds. Snow depths still good (250cm) unlike some of the lower resorts which look pretty patchy. Already the snow has gone in Yuzawa town. Hoping to get a chance to ski the resort again before the end of the season. Plenty of fun for beginners and intermediates. |

Late December 08 |
| Snow Condition : |
Good - but not that much |
| PROS : |
Good snow when other places don't have it - high up |
| CONS : |
Busy when other resorts aren't opened up properly |
| Review : |
Kagura is a good place and you can often rely on very good snow conditions up there. With the late start to the season in the region, Kagura offered the most slopes open even in late December and so it was pretty busy.
Snowfall the night before so the snow was good, but still not really much compared to how much there usually is up there. |

Limited lifts running |
| Review : |
A great place to get to for a day trip from Tokyo. The resort is big enough with enough variation from the top of lifts to keep you occupied. All the red runs have parts which will challenge and keep you on your toes.
Not many lifts were open today because of the winds, but lift 1 opened up about 2pm, which really made my day.
If you are going this weekend, I advise snowboarders to set their bindings right to the back of the board. The powder was outrageous - plentiful and plenty deep - knee to hip - and you'll get facefulls as you steam through it.
Great resort if you're comfortable on your plank(s).
I recommend nearby Gala if you're a bit on the wobbly side. |

Close to Tokyo, easy to get to!! |
| Review : |
1st day on a board for 1 and half years and I have to say I had a ball!!
To be out in early December was amazing, the snow, while being heavily tracked etc, was still good, decent snow. There were still pockets of powder at the edges of the runs (but by the time I got there, they were tracked out) and the runs themselves were bearing up well considering the numbers out there. I think with a little more snow, this place could be great, the area is pretty big, from what I saw maybe not enough for an advanced rider, but I was kept busy.
The Ropeway and Gondola had huge lines, but they moved very quickly and I think I only waited 10 mins a piece to get on them. The lifts were empty, god knows how all the people were getting to the top!! I also like the 1 person queues. It really makes things faster!! All in all a good day and a place that I will return to. |

1st ride of the season in Kagura.
Resort was very busy but that was to be expected.
In the morning the snow was hard pack but as the sun came out it soften up by lunch.
Cant ride down to the carpark at the moment you have to come down by the gondola but it's still early...all in all we had a good day, the lines for the tickets and lifts moved along very smoothly and for being the 2nd of December it was like a chill spring day session....
If you just want to ride because you love too then go.. you'll have fun...
If you dont like crowds and you want powder runs then wait a little longer.

Light, fluffy powder! |
| PROS : |
Not too busy, easy to get to the top |
| CONS : |
The quarter pipe will spit you out, box and rails are for beginners. |
| Review : |
Yuzawa area gets a bad rap but this mountain rocked! It was easy to get to the top of the mountain, gondola's and high speed lifts; there was a LOT of fresh powder to be had. It dumped the day before and then there were blue skies and powder; ski patrol are cool and you are mostly free to go where you like albeit at your own risk; short lift lines; nice park; lots of fun hits on the sides of the runs; etc...
I will definitely be back! |

No facilities at Mitsumata! |
| Review : |
Don't get on the slopes at Mitsumata if you are a beginner or you're travelling with beginners. When you get off the gondola there, you're surrounded by intermediate slopes so there is really no place to warm up.
At Mitsumata you should also be aware of the tiny shack that passes for a lodge. There are way too few lockers and they are really hard to access, in a corner of the room behind a rack of rental ski boots. The "changing room" is really more of a "stuffy crowded closet with no door".
I don't know if it's any better starting off at Tashiro. |

Usually good, and is usually better than other resorts in the area which are lower down. |
| PROS : |
Relatively close to Tokyo for a resort this size and quality. Usually best snow in the area, decent courses, great off piste, and relaxed off course policy |
| CONS : |
Takes quite a bit of time to reach Kagura from any entry point (Mitsumata, Tashiro, Naeba via Dragondola) |
| Review : |
Not much to add to the Pros and Cons. It can get quite busy as it's relatively accessible from Tokyo. But again, great off piste, policy, snow conditions (relative to other resorts in the area), nice view, and close to Tokyo (which is both a pro and a con). |

Powder in the trees - ice or slush on the grooms |
| PROS : |
Trees...oh, I love the trees |
| CONS : |
More, more...I want more ;-) |
| Review : |
Saturday we escaped Naeba via Dragondola and, watched by kamoshika, zoomed into Kagura. There we found tasty powder for the asking. Best snow in weeks. So many trees, so many runs. Sunday wasn't quite as good but, when Naeba was turning to slush, there were still small powder pockets for the inquisitive. Ride Kagura, play at night at Naeba, and tell the kamoshika hello for me. |
