50-75cm, bare patches in places. |
| PROS : |
Simple runs to get back into the groove or test out new gear |
| CONS : |
Slow lifts and short runs |
| Review : |
This was my first taste of boarding in Japan since moving to Tokyo, and my first go on my new setup. My girlfriend is a beginner with new gear too, so it was a good place to warm up.
She enjoyed the simple, consistent runs and the space to turn and ractice carving, but it was a little dull for anyone more advanced, excepting the steeper run at the top with the ungroomed section being the most fun in the resort.
A nice place, but not too challenging for anyone who can carve or turn at speed on a board. |

Slushy one day, snow and ice the next |
| PROS : |
Wide beginner runs, good food, a few tree runs |
| CONS : |
Limited, one short advanced run, lots of closed areas |
| Review : |
I visited iwaparra and I thought the runs were perfect for a beginner or a skier who wants to brush up his carving. The food is good with lots of election and it is cheap. The runs are so wide they don't seem busy and the lifts don't have long queues.
However an advanced skier would get bored in an hour most. There is no park and not many advanced runs (except the large mogul run at the top) The snow was good one day, and provided some good tree cut trough\'s on the cat track. A lot of off piste is closed though which is a bit annoying.
Bottom line great for beginners, and intermediates, advanced skiers you may easily get bored here! |

This resort hadn't been reviewed in awhile so thought I'd give my two cents. I went on a holiday that fell on a WED, which could be comparable to going on a SUN. I agree with the consensus that this is a good resort for beginners and/or a relaxing day for experienced boarders. That doesn't mean it wasn't fun.
There is plenty of room on the one main (and very wide) run to avoid newbies or teach your newbie friends if you like that kinda torture... it is steep enough to not be flat and still give you some decent speed.
The red (=blue in US) run from the summit down left starts narrow and gets nasty when crowded, but it feeds into a nice wide dropoff that was fairly challenging (for a red) all day.
The resort seems village-like even halfway up the mountain, which makes for plenty of food options. There was even a viking (buffet) lunch for only 1200 yen that had good high-calorie choices. First buffet I'd been too that was actually ON the mountain. Eat early (1130ish) to avoid the crowds.
VERY close to Echigo-Yuzawa station, around 5 minutes via the shuttle bus at Stop #3 (East Exit). There are two stops for the resort, I recommend the first one as there are plenty of lockers, a rental shop, and even a hamburger restaurant.
Combined with the special JR higaeri-ski-kippu, going here could be easy on the wallet. |

Great layout. Very wide runs |

Iwappara is a great place to take someone who is just learning to ski or board or if you want to have a relaxing day on the slopes. It has great wide runs that allow everyone a lot of room to move about or you can head further up the hill to have for more of a challenge. The staff are very good, and ensure a great day. |

Very good |
| PROS : |
Big wide areas - lots of untracked powder on the sides, fantastic views |
| CONS : |
Not too much if you need a big challenge |
| Review : |
Iwappara is a really great place if you are a beginner, and maybe one of the best resorts out there - the main middle course is very wide and gentle.
If you are intermediate level and looking for a challenge there is less to enjoy but it still has a few good courses near the top and to the right. If you can get to the top before it becomes a huge area of massive moguls, all the better!
Also some excellent views as well. (Check my photo gallery!) |

For beginners, Iwappara is great. Wide and relatively flat runs.
For the more experienced rider, it's entertaining for 2-3 hours - maybe four under great conditions. |

| PROS : |
The gondola takes you all the way to the top |
| CONS : |
Not much terrain variety |
| Review : |
I spend Christmas in Yuzawa, teaching my girlfriend how to snowboard.
The first day of our 4-day trip was in Iwappara.
I chose this place because it is perfect for the complete beginner.
Really wide not very steep main area, with good coverage of lifts and not very busy even on weekends.
We arrived there after an 80 cm dump and it was still snowing all day. Although I spent most of my time in the main gelende, I had some really nice runs at the top of the mountain. Most of the people going there are beginners, so the powder runs at the top just waited for me!
Unfortunately there is not much variety of terrain to ride, and if you don’t arrive there on a nice day you will be probably bored.
For certain, I would recommend this place to someone complete beginner or at his first steps in snowboarding. |

This was my first ski experience in Japan, and I couldn't ask for more. Tricky at the top for Beginners and Intermediates, a leisurely day out for experts looking for a nice smooth run, except when they hit the moguls. |

Not the biggest resort |
| Review : |
This is where I learned to snowboard, so I will always remember this place. Since then I've been back every year. This last year I was good enough to go into the snow park. What a blast. Even better than Happo one's snow park. Although the resort isn't all that big, it can take all day to transverse all the slopes.
All in all I love this resort. |

Not much of a challenge |
| Review : |
As intermediate skiiers we were all pretty bored with Iwappara. The one run from the top back down to the middle section is fun- particularly since it was full of so much snow... but the rest of the resort is very, very flat and wide. There was also a huge line for the gondola, which was tiring. None of the other lifts are covered and they seem painfully slow - so we were freezing to death (it was really windy and snowy). On a positive note, we had a break at a restaurant with a cool fire going - Iwappara seems to have a very wide selection of places to eat and better menus (i.e. more than just ramen & curry!). We enjoyed Gala more for variety of courses. |
