RESORT NAME : Kawaba, Gunma
Snowboarder
READERS NAME : Vincejp
DATE VISITED: regularly since 2008
SNOW CONDITIONS: go there after it snowed !
PROS : 1st resort on the Kanetsu to go to, a lot of backcountry
CONS : Crowded at times, kind of small if we stay only on slopes
REVIEWS : I love Kawaba for many reasons. First, it`s really close from where I live, I can get there in 1 hour. Then, there are plenty of areas to go to in the trees and the good things is, you can (almost) never get lost as there is only one way to the valley.

I went there on icy conditions also and I would not recommend it as it limits considerably the potential of the resort. The park is for beginners/intermediates but lacks big kickers.

The black and red slopes are pretty much empty as 80% of the people rides on the main green courses.

Resort very easily affected by wind.

SNOW CONDITIONS: Snowing lightly, piste a little icy, crunchy off piste
PROS : Has potential for great off piste on a good snow day
CONS : Smallish area
REVIEWS : Went up alone on a Friday, so it was not too busy but still enough people to avoid on the main runs.

Has nice potential for good tree runs and lift runs, however, as it hasnt had a good dump for a while, the pow among the trees and under the lifts have frozen and made for a very crunchy ride.

All in all, considering the distance from Tokyo, it isnt a bad area. Has 2 small park areas, with a few kickers, rails and boxes.

The runs themselves can be shortish and not too difficult for any intermediate riders out there.

As it was, had a good time. It was my second time there but the first time, which was the 20th, was a lot more enjoyable as the snow was still relatively soft and deepish under the trees and lifts.

Wouldnt mind going back during a heavy snow day as the room for potential could be great for its relative proximity to Tokyo.

READERS NAME : Phil
DATE VISITED: 25 March 2008
SNOW CONDITIONS: Very wet snow, no fresh stuff
PROS : Close to Tokyo, picturesque, great vibe
CONS : Nothing for more advanced boarders
REVIEWS : I chose Kawaba as a late season day trip based on the reviews on this site and I was not disappointed.

The snow was really wet and if it had not been sunny, it would have been very icy. But was better than I expected for this time of year.

The runs are not challenging, but they are all surrounded by trees and the views are great.

While I was there they just played cool reggae tunes, which helped me have a chilled out day.

If you are looking for a cheap and close day trip - this is the place. I will definitely go back next February to check it in peak season.

DATE VISITED: January 27th, 2007
SNOW CONDITIONS: Good
PROS : Close to Tokyo
CONS : Loud music
REVIEWS : I was impressed with Kawaba for a number of reasons. Although it\'s a bit farther than other areas nearby, Kawaba is laid out nicely.

The indoor parking makes it perfect for snowy days, and as it's attached to the main building, you never have to go outside so to speak.

The main building as a bunch of restaurants to choose from, as well as some nice places on the moutain itself. Those offer nicer views.

The mountain has lots of choices. I never felt really challenged, but for a day trip it was good to practice the basics. If there was more powder, it would have been great as I saw a lot of tracks going off into the woods.

The only draw back is the loud music. J-rap in the morning, followed by adult contemparary, then pop music and finally from 3:00 on, trance. Never heard of anything like this as it was all obviously planned ahead of time.

SNOW CONDITIONS: Superb
PROS : Superb snow, not too busy, great views
CONS : Not many - a bit hidden perhaps
REVIEWS : Kawaba is growing to be one of my fave places. They get some incredibly good conditions up there - you almost wouldn't think it was Gunma - and it is not too busy as it never seems to be as popular as it should be. I'm ok with that though, we wouldn't want it crowded out.

All round good place. Interesting setup too with the multistorey car park with the resort center on the top floor with the bottom of the slopes just outside that.

DATE VISITED: Somewhere March
SNOW CONDITIONS: Packed powder
PROS : Nice variation of runs
CONS : Far from the highway
REVIEWS : In the right conditions this could be a great resort. When I was there the powder was mostly skied out, but it had potential. They have a park with smallish jumps and slides. Great to give it all a try.

The mogul run a wel layed-out and a good alternative for powder.

SNOW CONDITIONS: Snow was perfect. There was a lot of powder.
PROS : No waits for ski lifts and heaps of space
CONS : No night skiing
REVIEWS : Kawaba ski field was excellent. There were ample facilties and the snow was great. The best thing was that we didn't have to wait in lift lines. The car park was covered and a short walk to the ski field. Also there is a lovely onsen down the road to relax in at the end of the day.

DATE VISITED: Long ago
SNOW CONDITIONS: Good year deep
PROS : Trees and BC
CONS : Small, no on-hill lodges
REVIEWS : Good little place with great trees and extreme back country.

Drop in off the double chair under the bubble quad for a nice line, or head over to the other double and traverse under the lift and down those trees great little spot.

Tons of places to drop in try to explore.

The BC is amazing - tons of chutes, bowls and cliffs that run you down the valleys. Go with a guide and you'll have the run of your life.

PS Most japanese pow mags film in and around these areas.

REVIEWS : We took a day trip by bus from Tokyo to Kawaba which, despite some time-wasting in early-morning Tokyo and small seats, was generally an easy way to do it.

The skiing was ideal for a day or even more with plenty of variety. The lifts were not too crowded and overall we had an enjoyable day on the slopes.

The resort itself is neatly self-contained in a single building offering everything we needed. The elevator down to the car park / exit at the end of the day was unfeasibly busy - my advice it take the stairs.
