Resort name : Joetsu Kokusai, Niigata
Snowboarder
Readers name : sakitumi
Date Visited : March 12, 2005
Snow Condition: POW POW all day long!
PROS : Good park, HUGE kickers and pipe
CONS : Semi small
Review : First off, it snowed all day, and although visibility was slightly poor the trails stayed fresh, and off piste was more than a blast. I have been here about 6 times, this time they centralized all of their kickers on one run and made the biggest kicker I've ever seen at the end of the run. I didnt attempt it but all of them are well made unless you go too slow, then its just painful. Rails ranged from low and flat to sectioned drop offs, I only tried first mentioned of course. If you make your way to the summit there is a less populated back area that is nice and open with various lifts running up and down, not to mention a little hidden townsquare with good food and gift shops. The hotel is a breathtaking German or Swiss style structure that seems to go on forever. It has about a million rooms all with good heaters and private baths. Onsens are within the hotel along with several different types of restaraunts. It's not the biggest resort but when it comes to that cozy, old town feeling, nothing beats it. I would give it 5 stars if I couldnt ride the entire mountain in one day but thats the only reason. Go there if you have a chance, especially if they're expecting pow.

Date Visited : Feb 2005
Snow Condition: Powder on Top, Ice spots
PROS : Challenging slopes, huge area of 3 resorts
CONS : Too crowded, too expensive, traffic to get out of parking area
Review : The resort was nice itself, but the long lines on the bottom were annoying. I recommend you to get a full ticket and ascend as high as possible and enjoy there. Some of the slopes were narrow and icy.

We wasted one hour and half to get a table to sit for lunch.

Also another hour to get out of the narrow parking alleys to the main road. I will never understand why Japanese make such narrow alleys even whyere they have HUGE space to build even a freeway!!

Resort name : Centleisure Maiko Snow Resort, Niigata
Snowboarder
Readers name : rossno
Date Visited : 19 march 2005
Snow Condition: Terrible! Light snowed all day, but the base under the frost that was falling was solid ice.
PROS : Great looking place! Clean facilities, and various food options.
CONS : Beginners Resort. Tooooo flat!
Review : Maiko is a great place to learn snowboarding. Easy dismounts from lifts, short runs, and a 500m flat ending to all runs! The average snowboarder beyond their first year would grow bored in an hour. The conditions were terrible because it had rained from several days before my visit and that produced solid rock ice on all slopes covered by a thin frost created by the snow flurrys of the day.

The facilities at Maiko offer three relaxation rooms for sleeping. I highly recommend the place if you want a hour on the slopes and then want a 3 to 4 hour nap in snow country. (smile)

Resort name : Cupid Valley, Niigata
Snowboarder
Readers name : James Gowans
Date Visited : March 18th 2005
Snow Condition: A little icy at the top, wet at the bottom, but good for the time of year.
PROS : No crowds and long runs.
CONS : Only 2 main courses. A bit out of the way.
Review : This is one of the few resorts in Niigata that is very far from the highway (40-50 mins from Joetsu IC). However, it's well worth the drive as there are no crowds. This proved to be just what I needed after visits to GALA and Hakuba where the amount of time spent in various queues drove me slightly crazy. And even though there's just two main sections here, the runs are really long, minimising time on the lifts. Also, there's no need for boarders to unstrap and walk, which is always a bonus. Nice place with nice people and a nice atmosphere.

Definitely give it a go!

Resort name : Mizuho Highland, Shimane
Both
Readers name : bulldog Member Personal page here
Date Visited : march 14 2005(mon.)
Snow Condition: 50cms of fresh spring pow
PROS : Good modern facilities, fast lifts, one gondola, nice course layout, best access around
CONS : Valley side parking was closed on the weekday, couldn't get to the baby room
Review : Mizuho revisited. This place kicks ass for western Japan. First time here on a weekday and like everywhere else, there is hardly anyone around. It dumped for two days before we came, so the snow was excellent for mid-March. The advanced runs have good terrain and enough length. The rest of the mountain is pretty wide open and good for beginners. Modern facilities with warm, clean toilets and decent restaurants, etc... It doesn't have the shabby run down feel of the Hyogo resorts which is good if you're with the wife and kid and want a decent place to hang out and enjoy a little family time (baby room and no-smoking sections, friendly staff).

Although it's not my gig, they do have a fun-looking half-pipe and board park. This place has room to expand and open up even more terrain -- I hope they do it.

Resort name : Hidatakayama, Gifu
Snowboarder
Readers name : Roland London
Date Visited : 5/03/05
Snow Condition: Powder
PROS : Remote - quiet
CONS : Lacks long runs and the jumps and rails!
Review : After a big dump - head here for great virgin powder skiing/boarding - very quiet midweek. If the very top chairlift is open - try it!! It's a severe gradient and has a nice little lip to get air - also great views from the top.

Resort name : Yamagata Zao Onsen, Yamagata
Skier
Readers name : highlandjin
Date Visited : 6-10 Feb.,2005
Snow Condition: Marvelous Silky powder
PROS : Good snow, real natural onsen, scenery
CONS : Bad visibility, juhyougen-course too narrow. Queue to the Ropeway.
Review : We went there with group of 10 and we have decided to come back next year. Takatori, Kurohime courses were OK and snow quality, Onsen, Juhyo and cost-performance, relatively easy access from Tokyo beat the complaints that there were too many flat sections in-between connecting gerendes.

Resort name : Nishidateyama, Nagano
Skier
Readers name : highlandjin
Date Visited : 5-7 March,2005
Snow Condition: Powdery, Packed. Quality comparable to mid-winter
PROS : Compact but no dull flat section that would satisfy every level
CONS : Not very long courses
Review : Using two quads it was so easy to get to the top of Nishidateyama from where we could cruise down all the way to the bottom of the valley. Although the course isn't that long, since no dull flat section in between so every skill level had great fun. Easy access to Ichinose from the top and to Giant and Higashitate from the bottom.

Resort name : Shiga Kogen Okushiga Kogen, Nagano
Skier
Readers name : Highlandjin
Date Visited : 6 March,2005
Snow Condition: Fresh powdery, fantastic soft snow
PROS : Not crowded at all even on a Sunday. Good snow. tranquil atmospher, no snowborder allowed. Sorry for boaders!
CONS : Bottom half is flat.
Review : North western tip of gigantic Shiga-Kogen. Easy access to Yakebitai and other ares of Shiga-Kogen. Okushiga slopes are facing east/north. So the snow conditon is generally very good and give you a fantastic view of Japan alps from the top. When we visited it was right after snow fall so the condition was really excellent with super blue skies. Absolutely no queue for the lift/gondlas. This is the place where the imperial family enjoy skiing. So you can imagine this is one of the best places to satisfy whole family members including three years old.
