Resort name : Appi Kogen, Iwate
Snowboarder
Readers name : Tim
Date Visited : Jan 3 - 15
Snow Condition: Powder
PROS : Deepest powder!
Review : This is the second trip back to Appi. It snowed everyday of what seemed like at least 30 - 40cm. The powder off the side of the groomers was incredibly lush, waist deep. There was even a day the groomed run was knee deep.. thats how much snow was falling. Food was quite expensive but good range.

Very friendly.

Resort name : Kagura, Niigata
Snowboarder
Readers name : Vincejp
Date Visited : Many times since 2008
Snow Condition: Usually better than other lower resorts in the area
PROS : Big resorts, famous for backcountry and tree runs, cool patrol
CONS : Crowded, far
Review : I usually go to Kagura early in the season and late in the season.

Eearly because it's not crowded like it is usually and also because it's one of the first resort to receive big amount of snow. This year 2010, was unbelievable, there was so much powder in December, you couldn`t actually ride it unless you were on one of the steepest side of the mountain. Sometimes, not all areas are open (Tashiro usually opens later).

Late because it's also not crowded and it`s one of the last resort to close (it`s not unusual to go there until golden week !). They also start operating an additional lift from early March which leads you to one of my favorite run in Kagura.

The resort is big, you can easily stay 2 days there without getting bored especially if you take the Naeba ticket. The park is fun to take a break off the slopes or to have some fun before taking the gondola back to the parking.

Tashiro will be good for beginners (beside some flat parts which requires to have speed not to stop).

Resort name : Oze Tokura, Gunma
Snowboarder
Readers name : Vincejp
Date Visited : Late March 2010
Snow Condition: Heavy
PROS : Not crowded, great park with a HUGE 15m kicker
CONS : Far... ! courses not very interesting
Review : I went there this year on a hot day (more than 15 degrees that day). We figured the snow would suck everywhere but at least here, we could practice our tricks and jumps. And that`s exactly what we did.

There are runs full of kickers and rails that you can have fun with, a decent half pipe also and a HUGE 15m kicker, the biggest I have seen in Japan by far (I think I have jumped on a 9m once in Kagura or Marunuma but nothing like that one).

It is clearly a snowboarders orientated resorts, skiers will be bored with the runs quickly (at least those who don`t like hanging in parks).

I believe this resort is never too crowded as it is far and specialized.

Resort name : White World Oze Iwakura, Gunma
Snowboarder
Readers name : Vincejp
Date Visited : since 2009 (7-8 times)
Snow Condition: Usually much better than average due to high altitude
PROS : Ggood snow conditions, big resorts, amazing view on sunny days
CONS : Ffar from highway, better for skiers, slow lifts, not much backcountry to go to
Review : I would say that Iwakura is not for beginners. Beside 2 green runs at the bottom, there isn`t much for them. On the contrary, I have rarely seen courses that steep in Japan (I`m French in case you wonder), and riders who enjoys speed and steepness will enjoy Iwakura.

If it has not snowed in a while, this resort is an option to consider as it is high in altitude, the snow rarely melt (meaning you usually don`t have very icy courses).

The park is not that interesting and is only used to avoid riding on the green slope on the way back to the lifts basically (if you`re looking for a great park, go to Tokura or Marunuma which are also in the area).

Better avoid going in February, it is more expensive (discounts don`t apply) and wayyyy more crowded.

Resort name : Kawaba, Gunma
Snowboarder
Readers name : Vincejp
Date Visited : regularly since 2008
Snow Condition: go there after it snowed !
PROS : 1st resort on the Kanetsu to go to, a lot of backcountry
CONS : Crowded at times, kind of small if we stay only on slopes
Review : I love Kawaba for many reasons. First, it`s really close from where I live, I can get there in 1 hour. Then, there are plenty of areas to go to in the trees and the good things is, you can (almost) never get lost as there is only one way to the valley.

I went there on icy conditions also and I would not recommend it as it limits considerably the potential of the resort. The park is for beginners/intermediates but lacks big kickers.

The black and red slopes are pretty much empty as 80% of the people rides on the main green courses.

Resort very easily affected by wind.
