Hakuba was home to many of the 98 Olympic downhill and cross-country events and the valley offers a wide range of great resorts.

From Tokyo to Nagano City

There is no direct train from Nagano City to Hakuba, so most people take a bus that from Nagano Station direct to Hakuba Village. The journey from Nagano Station to Hakuba takes about 1 hour.

If you want to go by train, from Nagano station take the Shinonoi Line to Matsumoto. Then change lines to the Oito line which heads north into the Hakuba valley.

Nagano Station > Shinonoi line > Matsumoto (about 40 minutes)
Matsumoto > Oito line > Hakuba (about 40 minutes)

From Nagano City:

From the Nagano I.C. on the Joshinetsu Expressway take Route 19 using the Hakuba-Nagano Olympic Route to the Hakuba valley.  The journey takes about 1 hour in normal conditions.

From the Matsumoto region:

From the Toyoshina I.C. on the Nagano Expressway, take Route 147, then Route 148 into Hakuba.  The journey takes about 50 minutes in normal conditions.

Toyoshina IC > Route 147 > Route 148 > Hakuba
