Niigata is
located to the north of Gunma Prefecture, with Nagano to
the south west and Fukushima and Yamagata to the north.
The resorts
in Yuzawa Town are some of the easiest to get to from
Tokyo, with many people doing day-trips using the Joetsu
Shinkansen (train) or Kanetsu Expressway (car). The resorts in
the Minakami region of Gunma Prefecture are also very convenient
using the Joestsu Shinkansen and Kanetsu Expressway.
How to get to
Niigata Prefecture by public transport:
The Joetsu Shinkansen
operates daily between Tokyo Station and Niigata
Station. Service is very frequent and very fast. It takes about 2 hours
from Tokyo Station to Niigata Station by JR Joetsu
Shinkansen Line, though most relevant here is the 70-80
minute trip from Tokyo Station to Echigo Yuzawa Station
(more here).
Niigata airport lies northeast of Niigata and takes about 25
minutes by bus from Niigata station. There are several
long distance buses to Tokyo every day that leave the
Tokyo region on the Kanetsu Expressway and a night bus
to Kyoto and Osaka that takes about 9 hours. You can
also take the Shin-Nihonkai ferry from Niigata to Otaru.
The trip takes 18 hours.
