For rail travelers, the Joetsu Shinkansen brings the natural beauty of Gunma to you in about an hour's ride from Tokyo. In addition, JR's express service on the Takasaki Line, which leaves from Ueno Station, will take you to Gunma in about an hour and a half.

To get to Gunma Prefecture, it is an about 1-hour ride from Tokyo Central to Takasaki Station on the JR Joetsu Shinkansen Line, then about 10 minutes from Takasaki Station to Maebashi Station by JR Ryomo Line. If you are coming from Osaka, it’s bout 2 hours and 30 minutes from Shin-Osaka Station to Tokyo Station by Tokaido Shinkansen Line.

If you are headed for the ski resort areas, take the Joetsu Shinkansen to Jomo Kogen - which takes about 60 minutes - and then make your way to the resorts by bus.

It is possible to avoid the Shinkansen by using the local trains from Tokyo, though the journey time will more than double.  To do this, use the Takasaki line and then the Joetsu line (which continues up through Yuzawa and beyond in Niigata Prefecture).

The easiest way to get to Gunma from Tokyo by car is to take the Kan-etsu or Joshin-etsu Expressways, which continues on to Niigata and Nagano. The network of roads in Gunma Prefecture is well designed, and connections are convenient to Tochigi and Nagano Prefectures. Using the local road system, Route 17 runs almost parallel to the Kanetsu Expressway throughout Gunma Prefecture.

Take the Kanetsu Expressway and exit at the Shibukawa-Ikaho I.C. From there, take Route 17 to Route 353 to Route 145 and finally to Route 292, which will take you to Kusatsu Onsen.
