Gunma Prefecture is located to between Saitama and Niigata, and is therefore easily accessible for people people living in the Tokyo region.  Yuzawa Town in Niigata Prefecture is just to the north of the town of Minakami (it's just a 15-minute drive from Minakami to Yuzawa on the Kanetsu expressway).

How to get to Hokkaido by public transport & general info:

Tanigawa & Minakami

The Minakami area has some excellent ski resorts such as Mt. Tanigawa. To get there, head toward Jomo Heights, which is about 1 hour 20 minuets from Tokyo Station by the JR Joetsu Shinkansen Line. From there, take a bus from Jomo Heights to Minakami Onsen, which takes about 10 minutes. In order to get to Mt. Tanigawa, take another bus from Jomo Heights to Tanigawa Ropeway. This takes about 55 minutes.

Mt Akagi

If you are going toward the Mt. Akagi area, you must first go to Takasaki Station, which is about 1 hour from Tokyo Station by the JR Joetsu Shinkansen Line. From there, Maebashi Station is about 10 minutes on the JR Ryomo Line. You must then take a bus from Maebashi Station to Akagisan-Bijita, which takes about 28 minutes.

Kusatsu Onsen

There are four daily express trains ('Kusatsu Shin-Tokkyu') leaving Tokyo from Ueno Station on the Agatsuma Line that take you as far as Naganohara Kusatsu-guchi Station. Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station is about 1 hour 10 minutes from Ueno Station by the JR new limited express train. From Naganohara Kusatsu-guchi, take the JR Bus to Kusatsu Onsen. The entire journey takes approximately 3 hours. Then take a bus from Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station to Kusatsu-onsen, which takes about 30 minutes. And take another bus from Kusatsu-onsen-bus terminal to Shiranekazan, which takes about 35 minutes.

Oza

Jomo-Kogen Station is about 1 hour 20 minutes from Tokyo Station by the JR Joetsu Shinkansen Line. Then take a bus from Jomo-Kogen Station to O-shimizu, which takes about 2 hours 10 minutes.

Mt Haruna

Shibukawa Station is about 1 hour 45 minutes from Ueno Station on the JR Joetsu Line new limited express. Then take a bus from Shibukawa Station to Ikaho-onsen, which takes about 30 minutes.
