Shiga Kogen is the one of the
giants of the Japanese ski resort areas and is
actually one of the largest (mostly*) connected ski
resort areas in the world with one pass giving you
access to over 70 lifts, gondolas and ropeways over
the area. Shiga Kogen actually comprises of a number
of resorts linked up – to ski from one extreme to
the other would take quite some time! If you don’t
want to slide on the snow from one area to the next
you can get around this huge area you can use the
shuttle bus service that is provided – free to

Shiga Kogen is an area in the
Joshinetsu National Park and actually part of a town called
Yamanouchi, in the Shimotakai district of northern
Nagano Prefecture. The main town area is at the base of
the mountain area and during winter the only way to get to Shiga
Kogen from the Yamanouchi town area is a 20-30 minute ride up
the mountain on Route 292 – snow tyres highly recommended!
Shiga Kogen is quiet at night,
so don’t expect much nightlife. But the snow quality is often
top notch. There are a number of natural hot springs in the area
so you can enjoy a good soak as well as the winter sports in
many accommodations.

The popular
Jigokudani Monkey Park is located in the
main town (Yudanaka) town area of Yamanouchi, and very much worth a
visit. If you want to see monkeys chilling out in a
natural onsen bath, this is the place!
Shiga Kogen is located about 150km from Tokyo and
it takes about 70 minutes to get there from Nagano
Station
(* the southern area including Kumanoyu and
Yokoteyama is not lined up - you need to take a
short shuttle bus ride to that area)
