Five days in Hakuba early in January provided a variety of conditions to check just how well the manufacturer's claims for the versatility of these skis stood up - thin powder on an icy base (top of Happo), loose powder, groomed piste, rocky slush and some pockets of (just) off-piste lift line powder.

The skis themselves look great - I'll admit that was an initial attraction - with a set-forward binding position, semi-fat proportions and rounded raised tails giving them the appearance of a hybrid cross between conventional piste skis and twin tips.

So... how did they perform? Pretty well, is the answer. Good speed and easy accurate turning on groomers, control and float in the softer stuff. I need to spend more time off-piste to fully assess how good they are, but that's something that they have made me look forward to doing...

Rating: 8/10

Final comments

The Apache Recons have, at least initially, proven to be a good choice. The only real negative is their weight - compared to other skis with similar dimensions, they are certainly hefty to lug around after all the fun that you're bound to have using them.
