Feature Articles: The Setting Journals

Blair Anderson has been working in Niigata Prefecture for over a decade now. He stumbled into his present job (at the ARAI Mountain & Spa resort in Niigata) in the same manner that he has got through life to this point - via the back door! He finds that the work suits him as it is kind of like being an eternal student, with no two days being the same. His regular contributions provide insight into behind the scenes operations at a Japanese snow resort.

International Seasonal Workers, A Couple’s Perspective
Ever wanted to come to Japan and get some of the powder you have been hearing so much about? Done a great deal of skiing/boarding overseas and perhaps met some Japanese folk doing the same? Have a significant other that also wants to come to Japan but worried you may not be able to find work/accommodation together? If you answered yes to any of the above, you are not alone.

White Season 2005-2006 Report
Read on for the next installment of the setting journals - which marks the final stages of a wild 2005 - ’06 White Season at the resort. An update from the final part of Green Season 2005 through to the present will be provided, as well as an introduction related to future volumes of the setting journals…

Update as of 3rd April 2006
It has now been seven months since I last sat down to pen a full column of the setting journals (following an aborted attempt peak-season). While taken for granted in the snow industry that all workers enter “reactive mode” at some point during peak season, despite the best of intentions/preparation I found myself stuck in such a state for just under half a year. What happened? Let me have the honor and pleasure of guiding you through it…
