How Was It For You Yuzawa
2001/2002 Season - Part 3

Ever wondered just how many people hit the slopes in a season here in Japan?

This time we will take a look at the numbers from resorts in the other main snow sports regions of Niigata Prefecture during the 2001/2002 season.

Shiozawa & Muikamachi Town

Shiozawa and Muikamachi town are located to the north of Yuzawa Town, and are also home to some popular resorts, including Ishiuchi Maruyama (which is connected at the top to the GALA Yuzawa Resort), Maiko Kogen and Joetsu Kokusai.  Most of the resorts held up fairly well last season, with most actually seeing small increases in the period from December 2001 until March 2002.  Okutadami Maruyama suffered most in the region due to the snow quickly melting away quicker than usual.

Myoko Town & Myoko Village

Myoko is another very popular winter sports region in the south west of Niigata Prefecture and is close to the border with Nagano Prefecture.  Whilst the popular Suginohara saw similar figures to the previous season, other resorts in the town saw a general slight decrease.  Again, the weather conditions at the end of the season were a big factor in this.

Arai shi & Yasuzuka-machi

ARAI city and Yasuzuka are located to the north of the Myoko area and near to the Japan Sea.  The popular ARAI and nearby Cupid Valley both saw similar numbers to the previous season, as seen below.

So in general the resorts of Niigata Prefecture put in a decent performance.  With this summer being especially hot and humid, everyone is hoping that the coming winter will bring large amounts of good snow and a long season to bring those numbers up!

Next time, we'll look at the percentages of skiers and snowboarders at some popular resorts, and how those numbers have changed since the previous season.
