Feature Articles: Chairman of the 'Board

Matt Cox presents his unique outlook on snowboarding and in particular the boarding scene in Japan in his column, Chairman of the 'Board.

Matt has been in Japan for seven years and boarding for six.  As well as being Chairman of the 'Board, Matt is the President of Tabibito Travel, an English-speaking travel agency based in Japan (and next in line for the throne of Kazakhstan, apparently).

4th April 2003 The Lost Dimension in the Search for Pow

“Where is the powder?” Why is this question so difficult to answer? Is the powder in Hokkaido? Yes, and no. Nagano? Yes and no. Yamagata, Aomori, Niigata, Fukushima, Gunma, or even Hyogo? Yes and no. It is under the fence on the far right? On the far left? Under the Gondola? Through those trees? On the closed run? Yes, and no.

“Where is the powder?” We’ve spent so many months looking for the answer that we don’t even bother to consider the question anymore and therefore we fail to realize that the question is seriously flawed.

Leap of Faith

There is something in the air these days. The air is no longer stagnant, bland, and quiet. The late fall air is laced with excitement and potential as if it has something to say. You can feel the difference in the dull sting of your toes when you wake in the morning and in the cold slap in the face when you open the door in the morning.

The Code of the Snowboarder

In the days when martial arts were finally being formalized after generations of undirected development, the fathers of these arts often produced codes of honor for their followers to heed, to ensure that the art never slipped into the wrong hands.  Since the early days of snowboarding, this art-like sport has virtually exploded in popularity causing the once focused familiarity, understanding, and honor to become lost or at least a bit confused.
