Yesterday turned out to be a curious one. Starting off fine, clouding over and then clearing up again in the morning. It then started to quickly cloud over again early afternoon and by 3pm there was complete cloud cover and it was all very grey. We had a few spots of rain later on in the day as well.
Sadly I've got to report more spots of rain this morning. It's not raining heavily at the moment but it is raining. There is grey cloud cover but right at this moment the sun poking through the clouds as well though I suspect that is very short term. With a high of around 7 degrees forecast for Yuzawa today, it looks like we will be lucky if we get away with only a bit of rain today. Right now at 9:30am it is around +5 degrees so very feeling mild.
Even so hopefully tomorrow it will be cold enough for us to get snow but it's going to be boderline...
We are definitely in for a run of mild days though so lets all just hope that things keep as cold as possible - we don't want that lovely snow we got over the weekend to quickly disappear!

The snow clouds stuck around for perhaps longer than expected yesterday. The snowy and windy conditions remained especially in higher areas affecting the resort operations at Kagura in particular but calmer down at town level. By the end of the day for the resorts the snow had stopped for the most part and it started to clear up.
This morning, there is still some cloud but more blue sky and the sun is out right now. The forecast is for a sunny bright day and it looks like that is what we will get perhaps clouding over in the afternoon (or sooner?). With the good snowfall over the last few days conditions should be excellent out there. Pick of the day must go to Kagura - the main area up there hasn't been open for a few days and so there should be lots of deep powder to be found up there.
It is -2 degrees at the moment but Yuzawa town will see a high of around +5 later on in the day so it is going to warm up. This week we should see warmer temperatures still. Sadly it looks like we will also be having some rain tomorrow, followed by fine weather on Wednesday and then maybe more rain Thursday.
For now though, enjoy!

Heavy snow yesterday and it is still snowing!
I would say I have had to move about 40cm of snow from the car since my report yesterday, perhaps a bit more. It is another cold morning but not quite as windy as yesterday and the only Kagura and Naeba seem to be affected in a big way by those conditions... Naeba are going to open the Gondolas if they can but they were not running a little earlier. Over at Kagura, only a part of both Tashiro and Mitsumata are open (Mitsumata to the pair lift at Kagura).
At town level though other than Yuzawa Kogen, places all seem to be open including Gala Yuzawa.
It looks like the snow clouds will start to clear up later on this afternoon and then tomorrow is going to be a fine sunny day. Top conditions it will be as well for those lucky enough to get out there.

Snow lovely snow. But, wind too.
We have got a lot of new snow in Yuzawa this morning. Iwappara are reporting 80cm. Mitsumata are reporting 70cm (but the official snow depth hasn't changed!). NASPA Ski Garden are reporting 70cm. And I had to move I would say about the same amount of snow off the top of my car as well this morning.
So it's good news in terms of snow. Some very strong winds have come with the snow though and that is affecting resorts in the area. Actually the wind seems to be really very strong for a moment all of a sudden and then it gets calm again.
Gala Yuzawa and Yuzawa Kogen are both closed. At Kagura only the Mitsumata area is closed and only part of Naeba is running as well (gondolas not operating and a few other lifts high up not started yet).
A bit of a wild day out there. The snow and wilds will likely continue throughout today and into tomorrow with perhaps it easing off tomorrow afternoon. The local forecast has anywhere between 40 and 90cm scheduled to fall between 9am this morning and 9am tomorrow morning.
Time for an onsen? Once things calm down a bit though conditions will be back right up there again.

Not a huge amount of snow on the ground yet - 5cm or so - but it is snowing fairly heavily now and the forecast says 50-70cm maximum before 9am tomorrow morning and so we should be on for deep powder conditions tomorrow morning in Yuzawa. Fingers crossed!
Unfortunately the snow tomorrow might be bringing strong winds - so if that is the case expect lift operation to be affected, particularly at higher resorts.
Snow forecast for all day tomorrow and at least the morning on Sunday but it might clear up later on in the day.
Just out of interest - as yesterday, there seems to have been more snow further to the north in Niigata prefecture - even Niigata city has 80cm or so of snow which is rare. They are saying it is the heaviest snowfall in Niigata (city) for nearly 30 years. But the snow falling from now on tonight should be hitting the mountain regions rather than the plains of Niigata.

Yesterday turned out to be a beautiful sunny day in the afternoon - blue skies, some cloud hanging on, and a fantastic sunset later in the day. And all this time it was snowing in other areas of Niigata! It was a very cold day though and was -4 degrees at 4pm.
Last night the forecast snowfall was 20cm or so, but we have had perhaps just a sprinkling earlier on but right now it is fairly cloudy but bright and even the sun making an appearance. Can we believe the forecast for today?
Well, lets give it a try.... heavy snow for tonight and tomorrow with light snow/clearing up on Sunday.
I'll post an update tonight with the latest hopefully with news of snow! |

Yesterday it was snowing for most of the day but there wasn't that much fresh snow to have to shovel up in the evening - one of those days when you think 'where did it go?'
Anyway this morning there was perhaps 5-10cm of new snow. That's somewhat disappointing after the forecast was telling us to expect more, but it's all welcome of course. Right now it is snowing lightly and it actually seems to be brightening up and the lastest local forecast has cloud lined up for the day. So not so much snow to expect today but... tomorrow and Saturday look like we might get some heavy snowfall in the area with the heaviest overnight on Friday so the weekend is shaping up to be a good one.
Currently it is -4 degrees in the town so it's a cold start.
