Just a quick update to Naeba Now -- summer is here along with hot temperatures.
From Friday the annual Fuji Rock Festival will be held on the lower slopes of the ski resort. Once again there are quite a few overseas artists playing at th festival this year - including Muse, Massive Attack and Roxy Music - as well as many local Japanese artists. The latest weather forecasts show a chance of some rain on Friday but fine, clear sunny weather on Saturday and Sunday.

The snow season is now officially over at Kagura - and therefore all of the resorts in the region. The lifts closed for the last time just a short while ago. But it has been a long season with really good snow cover right up until the end.
All of the lifts are now closed. The Dragondola (connecting Naeba with Tashiro) plans to be open for the peak 'autumn colours' season from Saturday 9th October until Sunday 7th November. Other than that, Naeba is usually fairly quiet, though there are always the views and hiking to do in the area, and more going on down in the main town area of Yuzawa. The weather forecasts will continue to be updated right through the year on each of the main resort pages on the site, links to the right of this page.
Kagura has announced that they hope to be able to open for next season on 20th November, while Naeba is hoping for an early December opening.... obviously depending on snow!
Here's hoping for a bumper 2010/2011 season.
Thanks for reading and have a good summer. These Naeba Now reports will resume in autumn as the build up to the 10/11 season begins. |

Not long left now! After today, just tomorrow and Sunday left of this long, long season.
After a wet start in town there is still a lot of cloud around on the mountain this afternoon but it isn't raining.
We're just down to the main course open at Kagura now, with people having that last run having to take the Gondola back down rather than ride down the Gondola course.
Weather for the weekend? Looks like tomorrow will generally be cloudy but warmer today, followed by clearer and perhaps sunny conditions on Sunday.

Good weather was forecast for the weekend and it was sunny and warm on Saturday, but yesterday we got some heavy rain and strong winds along with much cooler conditions.
This morning it is still raining and we still have those heavy winds blowing around -- and because of that Kagura is closed.
The other news is that there isn't enough snow left on the Mitsumata slopes, and so a shuttle bus is now taking skiers and snowboarders up from the top of the Mitsumata Ropeway to the base of the Kagura Gondola. The last Ropeway up is now 2:30pm. (Not today of course as it is closed because of the winds - tomorrow the resort should be open again).

Kagura (via Mitsumata) plans to be open until 30th May.
Lifts that remain operating at Mitsumata/Kagura are as follows:
Mitsumata Ropeway
Kagura Gondola
Kagura No1 quad
Regular updates from the Yuzawa area until the end of the season can be found on the main Yuzawa Now page.

Well after that snow, things warmed up again and it has generally been fine weather with some rainy periods once or twice. This morning, the sun is out and it is already 15 degrees up at Kagura. It looks like we should see fine and sunny conditions over the weekend as well.
Lifts that remain operating at Mitsumata/Kagura are as follows:
Mitsumata Ropeway
Mitsumata No1 quad
Mitsumata No3 pair
Kagura Gondola
Kagura No1 quad
The Mitsumata lifts are only operating to take people up to the Kagura Gondola - the courses at Mitsumata are now officially closed and only to be used as "connecting" courses" to get to, and back from, Kagura. The snow at Mitsumata is now thin on the ground and it's just a narrow run back down to the Ropeway.
Regular updates from the Yuzawa area until the end of the season can be found on the main Yuzawa Now page.

10-15cm of snow at Kagura overnight according to the offical resort report this morning. I bet you weren't expecting that! Let me just check it isn't April 1st!
Yes it has been pretty cold the last day or two and while it has been raining a lot lower down, seems we have some new white stuff up there to play in which is a fantastic surprise and not expected in mid-May. It is still raining in the village area and likely to be more sleet-y up top.
The forecast is for cold temperatures to continue into tomorrow but clearer weather from Saturday.
Lifts that remain operating at Mitsumata/Kagura are as follows:
Mitsumata Ropeway
Mitsumata No1 quad
Mitsumata No3 pair
Kagura Gondola
Kagura No1 quad
The Mitsumata lifts are now really only operating to take people up to the Kagura Gondola - the courses at Mitsumata are now officially closed and only to be used as "connecting" courses" to get to, and back from, Kagura. There has certainly been a lot of melt going on there and the snow is thin on the ground now and the courses narrow. Snow cover remains good on the Kagura main courses though, which of course remain open.
Regular updates from the Yuzawa area until the end of the season can be found on the main Yuzawa Now page.

We had more fine weather over the weekend and it is more of the same today as well and a high of around 22 degrees forecast for town and probably around 14 up here.

Mitsumata Ropeway
Mitsumata No1 quad
Mitsumata No3 pair
Kagura Gondola
