It turned out cloudy yesterday from around lunchtime after that bright start.
It is a mild morning here in Naeba and unfortunately it is raining early on. Not belting it down, just more like drizzle at the moment. Apparently just cloud conditions up at Kagura so that is good news. It is currently +2 degrees in the village and will probably rise to around +4 during the day.
Similar conditions tomorrow perhaps so we can only hope for colder temps.
It seems that stronger winds high up mean that Mitsumata/Kagura is open up until the No1 pair lift at Kagura while Tashiro is open to the No1 quad lift. Connecting courses to open if conditions permit later.
The Dragondola is not moving but the No2 Gondola open at Naeba.

The weekend saw a lot of people at the resort limited to a fairly small areas due to the at times wild conditions. Tons of snow and strong winds meant that lifts and courses were closed.
There'll be none of the today as while there's still a fair bit of cloud hanging on, the conditions have take a big turn and we already have part blue skies and the sun shining down on the mountains at the moment. It is a cold start but it will likely warm up fairly quickly.
Bottom line today though is that conditions are probably going to be close to perfect. With no-one up at the main Kagura resort area, it will be a powder paradise up there today for the lucky people able to. The weekend crowds have gone so there'll be the choice of all that untouched snow that we have got since Friday.

More snow to report this morning as this cold front brings us more goodies from the sky. Kagura is reporting 40-60cm of fresh snow and I would put the same number on how much we have had in the village since the last report. Nice.
The wind is still with us though. Not as crazy as yesterday but still enough to affect whats open.
At Naeba just a short while ago the No 2 Gondola opened but the No 1 remains closed. No 3 and No 5 quads are running along with pairs No 3 and 4 but other lifts either closed or waiting on the conditions to improve right at this moment, so it's limited operations on the mountain again.
Mitsumata Ropeway is open and the resort from there until the No1 pair lift at Kagura. From the Tashiro Ropeway to No 1 Tashiro quad lift is also open.
The forecast has the winds calming down later on today (though probably not in time for the resort to open up) and then a chance of much calmer weather tomorrow - perhaps even sunny.

Loadsa snow! Thats what we want to hear. Unfortunately, the heavy snow that we have seen in the last 24 hours - starting around early afternoon - is also accompanied by some very strong winds and the day looks set to continue.
Kagura is reporting 70cm of fresh snow while I would say about the same down here in the village though the wind is blowing about a lot so at times it's hard to tell.
The winds are affecting the resorts big time today. Tashiro is closed as is the Dragondola and main Kagura area leaving only the limited Mitsumata area of Kagura resort open this morning. At Naeba the gondolas are not moving and other lifts are on standby (and probably will be for the whole day because of the winds) leaving just part of the resort open mostly the lower part of the mountain as I write this.
It is snowing still and a very cold -7 degrees. I think quite a few people have headed to the hot springs! The snow might ease off tomorrow - in the afternoon?
Once it clears up though we'll be back to top conditions.
Official snow depths haven't moved yet despite the fresh snow, but here they are anyway...

Hmmm. Just a sprinkling of snow at Kagura overnight and none really here in the village. Yesterday the clouds moved on for the most part and we were left with a fanstastic afternoon in the region. Today is starting with fairly similar conditions but the promised snowfall looks set to start this afternoon.
The JMA official forecast for Yuzawa has an average of 40cm and a maximum of up to 80cm forecast between now and 9am tomorrow morning. They seem pretty confident that we should see a really thick new blanket of snow overnight and also into tomorrow as well. Blizzard conditions? Maybe. But whatever, it looks likely to be very cold and snowy tomorrow with a good chance that Sunday will be clearer. Oh, and should be great snow too!
It's cold now too. -9 at Kagura, -6 degrees in the village and the top of Naeba reporting -11 degrees.
Have a fun weekend!

50cm between yesterday morning and this morning the forecast said. They got that one wrong sadly. Just a 5-10cm at most to report since yesterday mornings report. It did snow yesterday for the most part but didn't amount to much in terms of cm on the ground. This morning it is snowing lightly and visibility is fine though it is a cold morning.
I dare the forecasts to get it right this time! They are saying heavy snow tomorrow night into tomorrow which would make for a perfect start to the weekend. So lets hope they get that right. Looks like it will be a snowy weekend, especially on Saturday though as you well know things change quickly.
Should be pretty good conditions out there today if you can get out.

Things are looking good for that 40cm before the weekend I wrote about... already we have got 20cm or so of that overnight up at Kagura and it is still snowing now and likely to continue over the next few days.
It is a cold morning and -9 up at Kagura and Naeba reporting a low of -11 degrees. There's not much of a wind at the moment and visibility is generally fine so it's just the cold. Good excuse to move!
The regional forecast says an average of 25cm and a maximum of 50cm between now and 9am tomorrow, so fingers crossed they have got that right this time.
