It's a pretty nice day in Myoko; the sun is out, fresh snow has made things bright and clean again, there's a dusting of snow on the trees in the mountain.... Temperatures are staying down at night, although the sun is warm. And there was some fog at higher altitudes early in the morning, but that seems to be lifting as well.
Some light snow looks possible tonight, but around Saturday it may warm up again significantly, before the temperatures drop again. Pretty wild changes of conditions, but as long as the snowpack holds up, things should be good.

The rapid changes of weather we've seen recently continue today; after warm and rain, it's much colder today, with a light dusting of snow on top of a much harder base. The base continues to decline—well, it's holding up now—while the conditions are definitely less than great in the trees. It's at the stage where we really want either a big dump of fresh, heavy as it might be, or consolidation of the pack for spring skiing.
As always, though, it's nice when fresh snow falls and covers up some of that latte-colored stuff around the base area.

As predicted, the howling winds that came through last night (bringing the snow levels down again) was followed by rain today. It was fairly light, though, and leveled off by noon. It's supposed to snow next; let's hope so, as the slopes today are getting to be a both latte-colored. But with the changing weather is deep, gloomy fog—it's hard to see out there.
Officially, most lifts are still running; in fact, some are shut down on weekdays, or are running fitfully. The No. 3 lift at the top of Suginohara will only be running on weekends (the whole area closes the first in the season, at the end of March), while word has it that the Chuo lift at Akakura Onsen was also not open yesterday. Officially it's listed as operating; if not, walk over to the bottom of the Champion area (although that might be a different lift ticket, depending on which you bought).

The next cycle of wind, rain (and hopefully snow) has definitely begun, with increasing wind, warm temperatures and clouds that look ready to let go. A couple of the resorts get credit for accurately reporting some pretty high temperatures; if it were sunny it would be a fun, spring day (but it's pretty gray, if not entirely gloomy).

Not that much snow actually fell overnight, but it was a nice white start to Sunday. Fog in the morning gave way to a beautiful sunny day from before lunchtime; it remained cool enough that the snow wasn't terrible mushy— just good early spring conditions. Some pretty strong winds, particularly on the peaks, but things quieted down by late afternoon.
Tomorrow's forecast is for rain, but it will once again turn to snow on Wednesday and beyond. We'll take all we can get, so the season goes on as long as possible.

It's snowing! I wanted to wait a little bit on making the report, because we did in fact start the day with rain. It was about 5° at base at 9, but the temperature came down, the wind shifted to the north, and we're now getting a pretty solid snowfall. So far it's just been a centimeter or two, but it looks like we could have a pretty good addition to the snowpack by tomorrow.
And, on top of that, it should be a nice, sunny day tomorrow. Another good reason to come out skiing (before it rains again early next week!).

Yesterday's fresh is today's heavy and wet (still better than ice, though). Pretty high winds through the day, although lifts kept going.
Offpiste it was pretty heavy going today; it wasn't powder and it wasn't spring snow, but something sticky in between. The forecast has things getting colder, with the possibility of rain tonight, turning to snow tomorrow. It seems, at least for the moment, that winter is hanging on in Myoko!
One note (discovered the hard way): the No. 3 lift at Suginohara Ski Area does not run on weekdays; if you want to hike up Mt. Mitahara (a popular backcountry course), be ready for a three-hour or more hike tot eh top. Or wait for the weekend and join the crowds (although the area seems to be doing all it can to discourage people from going out, even up the hill).
