Saturday 4th February 2012, 9:41AM
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: <2cm (observed)
Snow depth: 370cm (Akakan)
Very light snow is falling in Myoko this morning; the national weather service has forecast some pretty heavy winds and snow for the day, but so far things are quiet.

Some lift delays for snow clearance; Akakan's No. 5 lift at the top of the Hotel side of the area is delaying its opening while the towers get a good clearing. Otherwise things are pretty normal (just stay clear of those snow-loaded roofs!). It's cold, and there's a nice dusting of new snow on the runs. If the winds come as predicted, there could be some lift closings, so get out early and enjoy some really easy-skiing snow.

Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: 30cm+ (observed)
Snow depth: 390cm (Akakan)
More fresh snow fell overnight in Myoko, but nothing like what we've been seeing. It wasn't light and fluffy, though, so the going in the powder may be a bit heavy today. We also saw some pretty strong winds during the day yesterday, right after I posted the report, with some lift closings as well because of wind.

It's a nice sunny day, though, if cold: Suginohara reported -12°C this morning. It's nice to have some sun, though, after all the snow that's fallen. For everyone keeping score, it seems like the Myoko area is near the top in the national total snowfall standings (we win again!). Lots of sore backs among the locals, but it's a lot of fun to see just how much snow there is.

One local note: be sure and visit the Kamakura (giant igloo) festival at Akakan on Saturday night. Might as well celebrate al the snow in style.

Thursday 2nd February 2012, 12:33PM
Weather conditions: Moderate to heavy snow
New snowfall: 30cm+ (observed, at 6pm)
Snow depth: 390cm (Akakan)
A lot of snow and wind overnight and all reports are that the heaviest is yet to come. It's still snowing fairly heavily in mid-morning, but the wind has come down. Those big snow walls keep going up....

It's probably going to be pretty heavy going in the deep areas of the ski areas; the wind packed the snow pretty well during the night. If you're thinking about going into the backcountry, the best word would probably be, don't. It's going to be hard to go up, and most likely a slog coming down, too. Add on a really high probability of avalanches on the slopes steep enough to get any downhill speed on, and it's a real recipe for not good stuff.

Sorry to be negative—the good side is the excellent snowpack that's getting built up—but this is just not your normally unusual snowfall. We've moved into record-book quantities, and things will be more normal shortly. We hope.

So, as I've commented on several times: why are some of the ski areas showing very little or no fresh snowfall in this morning's reports?

What they say is what is official, but trust me: it doesn't take three hours of heavy-equipment snowthrowing to clear 20cm around my house.

There's more out there!

Weather conditions: Heavy snow
New snowfall: 20cm+ + (observed, at 6pm)
Snow depth: 390cm (Akakan)
The snow is really starting to come down again; I didn't plan on making such a late report today, but road delays (from all the previous days of snow) and high winds along the ocean made everything basically stop. And it's good that we can see that yet another major snowfall is here. There's at least 30cm on the ground, and the rate is really heavy and steady.

The good news is the great base that this is building for the rest of the season, the bad news is things like train delays, and the roof that collapsed on a local hotel this afternoon due to a huge cornice that just couldn't be cleared in time. It's really important, too, if you stray off the course and into the trees to be really careful about sluffs and little valleys. It doesn't take much to get buried. For actual backcountry travel, it's going to be tough going up, and extreme caution should be made on any steep slope. There may be soem weak layers on south-facing slopes, too—there's a lot going on and it really pays to be very careful.

Tuesday 31st January 2012, 7:39PM
Weather conditions: Cloud, snow
New snowfall: 10-15cm + (observed)
Snow depth: 390cm (Akakan)
There was 10-20cm or so more new snow this morning and, guess what, it has been snowing again on and off today.

Yesterday we had a period of clear weather which was welcome as much as it was a surprise really, but it didn't last long. Suginohara resort reported yesterday that they got well over 50cm of new snow up there, so it was really coming down when it did snow.

We are expecting some heavy snowfall tonight once again into tomorrow.... we are very likely to see some strong winds blowing things around tomorrow as well, so it doesn't look like it is going to be the most ideal day to be out on the slopes.

It is starting to look like we will be seeing a break from all of this snow soon though with things forecast to clear up from around Friday. A clear weekend? I think a lot of people might be hoping for that!

Monday 30th January 2012, 10:17AM
Weather conditions: Snowing, sometimes heavily
New snowfall: 30cm + (observed)
Snow depth: 390cm (Akakan)
Well, the forecast may have been for a little bit lighter snow overnight, but it just kept on coming all through the day, into the night and is still coming down. We are now living and driving in tunnels—the roadside walls are just that tall. So where the official word was maybe 10cm, there's a lot more out there.

The trains are not running right on schedule today, which is not that uncommon with this amount of snow (especially between Myoko and Kurohime); the primary schools are also closed, which almost never happens. The word is that the officials are worried about the cornices that are hanging off the south sides of almost all buildings.

Sunday 29th January 2012, 4:17PM
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: 15cm since yesterday
Snow depth: 390cm (Akakan)
Yes the snow has continued, although not quite as heavy as it is has been and visibility around town at least has improved today. We are still shrouded in cloud though and snow continues to fall. There has been more of a wind today though on the mountain. Temperatures remain cold and will keep cold through this next week with the snow clouds forecast to remain over Myoko right through the week.

Local forecast tells us to expect possible around 10cm or so more snow overnight. Back to heavy snow around Tuesday/Wednesday this coming week.
