Tuesday 9th February 2010, 9:58AM
Weather conditions: Light overcast
New snowfall: 0cm (Akakan)
Snow depth: 250cm (Akakan)
It started out a gloomy day in Myoko — rain, lots of rain; clouds, dark gray clouds. Things are looking a bit brighter now, with the sun peeking out and the rain tapering off. The winds are starting to rise a bit from the west/southwest, and it's very mild out.

The forecast for later and on into the week is for snow, so there are good things to look forward to. The rain also conditioned the super-dense windpack and probably brought down a lot of avalanches in the backcountry (it certainly brought down the snowpack figures for most of the resorts, too, apart from the one that never decreases ). It will be interesting to see how things have settled as we begin to venture out again in the coming days.

Weather conditions: Sunny, with high, thin clouds
New snowfall: 5cm (Akakan)
Snow depth: 305cm (Akakan)
Myoko had a lot of snow over the weekend — wind, snow, more wind and more snow. It's hard to tell how much in total fell; it definitely was more than the resorts are reporting. Pretty heavy windpack out in the trees and backcountry; impossible to ski on Saturday, local reports have it, although better (at least for boarders) on Sunday.

That much windpack on top of some questionable layers in the snow (there are three distinct layers beginning at about 25cm below this latest heavy fall) means that caution is required. There was a major avalanche over in Shiga on a west-facing (ungroomed, currently unused) slope, and now with the sun coming out, the conditions are not getting any better. Choose your slope carefully (tours were called off on Sunday, just because it's too questionable, and probably impossible to ski down — probably a walk-down through the heavy snow!).

Weather conditions: Heavy snowfall
New snowfall: 60+cm (observed)
Snow depth: 300cm (Akakan)
One word: snow. Hard to tell when you're constantly shoveling, but somewhere around a meter has fallen since yesterday afternoon. The winds that were predicted have so far not materialized, so the lifts appear to be running just fine.

Offpiste, be very careful; the slopes are loaded and sluffs are a certainty. Avoid terrain traps—or even better yet, stay on the slopes for today—there will be powder everywhere!

Weather conditions: Heavy snowfall
New snowfall: 20cm (observed, end of day)
Snow depth: 260cm (Akakan)
Snow continued to fall all through the day today, turning to heavy fall and stronger winds at the end of the day. Cold temperatures and lots of snow make for cold faces; be sure and bring a neck gaiter, fleece face cover, etc. tomorrow.

Looks like there could be considerable snowfall overnight (yeah!); the trains were stopped between Joetsu and Kurohime until 3 pm (ouch). Check with JR if you're on trains tonight or tomorrow; be ready for some lift closures if the predicted high winds come up tomorrow. But the snow is super light, and that makes up for any inconveniences nature might produce. No changes for most of the areas, but more than 20cm has fallen by the end of the day.

Weather conditions: Moderate, ongoing fall of light snow
New snowfall: 10cm (Akakan)
Snow depth: 260cm (Akakan)
Beautiful, continuous fall of light snow... I woke up this morning with found memories of the season of heavy snows three years ago, where it wasn't always heavy snow, but it almost never stopped. Kind of the same feeling in the a.m.—light snowfall that just doesn't seem to want to stop

It's cold as well, so the powder is keeping its high skiability; lots of people coming off the mountain with big smiles on today. More snow is forecast ahead, too...

Weather conditions: Moderate to heavy fall of light snow
New snowfall: 40+cm (observed)
Snow depth: 250cm (Akakan)
Well, good intentions.... I hoped to get online early, but we had a good dump of snow, meaning some early-morning snowthrowing, plus a neighbor who is away (so double the normal use of the big machine). But it's nice snow — good big flakes, very, very light. It should be outstanding skiing, as the wind did threaten to rise midday, but never got too strong (i.e., the lifts kept running.

The winds are picking up now a bit, with snow continuing to fall fairly heavily. It's still cold, too, with the temperature at base remaining around -4°.

Weather conditions: Sunny day; clouds and winds moving in
New snowfall: 10+cm (observed)
Snow depth: 220cm (Akakan)
Red sun in morning....sailors might take warning, but we're looking ahead toward some good snow ahead. I was up in the mountains early this morning (hence a delayed report), and we could watch the barometer fall and the first flakes start falling. Now, just before 5, winds have become to rush down Mt. Myoko, and the peaks are covered in white.

The local forecasts are for blizzard-like conditions in the morning, and it has that feel right now. I'll post early in the morning, so if the winds are high and the lifts look likely to close, you'll have a heads-up.

Backcountry: lots of layers in the snow, but hard to say what's happening. Some fairly easy shears at 25cm and 45 cm today, but solid on compression tests. As always, watch the steep slopes (i.e. too far south on Maeyama — stick to the north-side ridge on the main face, particularly if we do get a heavy fall.
