That's it folks! Madarao Kogen ski-jo is now closed for the season.
And what as season it has generally been. I think we can safely say that we have enjoyed some pretty amazing snowfall in the region this season. At one point there it felt like we were getting huge amounts of new snowfall every day - it didn't seem to want to stop. And we actually have finished the season now with over 200cm of snow still out there on the slopes. It's going to take a while for the snow to disappear, especially as a look at the forecast shows more snow due this coming week! No doubt though later on this month it will suddenly start getting really warm and come May the snow will be a distant but fond memory.
Summer in Madarao is nice and (relatively) cool. Always worth a trip for general outdoor activities and of course the views over to Myoko in one direction and Shiga Kogen and Nozawa in the other is always spectacular on a clear day.
Thank you for reading these reports, hope you enjoyed them and were able to visit Madarao this season.
We'll see you in the autumn as we start posting reports again on Madarao Now in the run up to 12/13 season. Let's hope it's as snowy as this one has been.
Have a fun and safe spring/summer wherever you are. |

Good morning. It's April 1st, the last day of the season, and I bring news of 15cm of new snowfall at Madara. No joke, honest!
The rain that we started off with yesterday soon turned into snow and with a strong wind as well it was falling pretty good at times. Felt like winter again. This morning it remains colder, so we should be having a really fine last day for 11/12. Nice clear skies about Madarao as well.
With some more snow lined up in the coming week it makes you want the resort to remain open longer, but that's it I'm afraid.... once the lifts close this evening that is the end of the season at Madarao.
But it's a great way to finish with some great snow conditions. Dare I say powder, even? :)
I'm certainly going to get out there to enjoy it.
I'll post a season wrap-up report tomorrow.

I was hoping to report snow this morning but unfortunately the day is starting off with rain. Just too warm for snow but we can expect the temperature to drop during the day and are still expecting it to turn into snow later on. Onegai shimasu! Just today and tomorrow left of the season so a nice new layer would be very nice.
Tomorrow should be colder and hopefully we might see the remains of the snow that we are due today still falling and just generally cloudy.

Three more days to go this season.
And it's a warm one as forecast. 6 degrees at the resort and it'll rise a bit more than that. Just a cloudy start to the day really with patches of blue sky visible in some places here and there. Not quite the clear skies we were expecting though the local forecast still says it should be a fine day.
Snow quality is as you might expect with 'zarame' granulated sugar-type snow out there.
Can the last few days bring us a last blast of fresher conditions? It still looks like there's a good chance of that happening. Snow lined up for tomorrow and Sunday - possibly rain/sleet before the white stuff arrives in the morning as temperatures look set to remain mild through until tomorrow morning and then drop as the day moves on.
I'll let you know.

And yes the sun is out this morning and we are being treated to another dazzling day here. Only a few more days left this season in Madarao - I think I said it before but just so hard to believe - and it is still looking like we will see some snowfall for that last weekend. I'll craftily glaze over tomorrow which seems to be very warm and look towards Saturday when hopefully we will see snow falling. Looking at the forecast, potentially decent snowfall too. It would be a fine end to the season.
As for tomorrow, bring your air-conditioner equipped shirt as it is going to be w-a-r-m out there.

Still looking at warming temps over the next few days with sunny skies tomorrow and then back down cold for Saturday and hopefully a last decent snowfall cover for the resort over the weekend.
