Report:
Well yesterday was interesting. While we watched some really quite heavy snow fall in many parts of Niigata, especially on the plains to the north out of the mountains, it didn't really snow all that much here. At times we even saw some clearer skies open up.

This morning seemed to have been a different story as the heavy snow were falling and just before it was coming down really fast and with some impressively big flakes. According to the local forecast we are set for snowy conditions to be with us here into the weekend basically, so it looks like we should expect some significant new cm of snow.

The strange thing is that even since I started putting this report together, the snow has stopped falling, visibility has improved dramatically and the sun is out in the Mimamiuonuma valley. Don't know where that came from, but there's every chance that it will disappear once again as quickly as it appeared. Like I said the forecast is for snow. And over at Naeba a look on the webcam shows me that the skies are clearer up there as well. So who knows - we'll just have to see how the day turns out...

Up until now this morning not a huge amount with maybe 5-10cm or so I would say in places - more to the north in Minamiuonuma.

With that rain the other day we could do with a good helping of snow before the weekend to get those snow conditions back up to where they were before. Bring it on please!

Winds are affecting operations up at Kagura this morning with the Tashiro closed for the day and only the Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura No1 pair lift open. That means that the Dragondola will be closed as well and perhaps a few lifts at Naeba as well. Other than that resorts seem to be open as usual around town this morning.

Weather conditions:
Snow, cloud
New snowfall:
few cm (town); 10-20cm (Kagura)

Report:
Yesterday is best forgotten! It was raining pretty much for all of the day and into the night as well. Can't have done the snow out there any favours unfortunately.

We've turned around though now and this morning we have a bit of snowfall to report with the prospect of some decent snowfall over the next few days. Just a bit in town with Kagura up top reporting 10cm and up to 20cm in places where the most has fallen. Temperatures are back down below zero as well after that warm day yesterday (when it reached as high as around 6 degrees), with the current temperature in town being -3 degrees. We basically have snow forecast for today, tomorrow and Friday and so hopefully we can start building up a nice new fresh deep layer.

These sudden changes in temperature of course are not good for the stability of snow layers and so extra care and awareness needs to be taken if you are going out of the official runs and in backcountry.

Weather conditions:
Rain (sleet/snow higher up)
New snowfall:
0cm (town); 0cm (Kagura)

Report:
As per yesterdays report, the day started off clear with beautiful blue skies and for the most part it stayed like that for much of the morning. Wispy clouds started forming though and by mid afternoon the skies took were covered by grey clouds. Such a transformation. The rain held off though, until late last night.

It was raining when I last checked around 11pm last night and this morning it is still raining in town. Heavy rain unfortunately. Kagura and Naeba are reporting snowfall - sleet down to the Mitsumata Ropeway station, and our man in Naeba says that it is actually raining in the village area - as is Yuzawa Kogen and Gala Yuzawa, but it's surely going to be of the sleet/wet snow variety this morning. It's a mild 4 degrees in town now.

Hoping that it will ease off later this afternoon and overnight snow is forecast to be with us once again and it should be snowy conditions until the end of the week. So looking forward to that.

Today might be a day for an onsen!
