There has been 12cm of fresh snow in the village since yesterdays report. If you were up early this morning you may have gotten excited about the size of the mammoth snow flakes that were coming down. Temperatures again, while below zero, are quite warm. The sun was out early morning and softend things up - since then clouds have rolled and made the day look rather grey. Visibility is compromised due to the snow precipitation and flat light.

It has really heated up today. The first evidence of this was walking outside this morning and hearing the sound of water dripping off roofs. The roads soon warmed up and turned, first to slush, and then turned into a river. Expect some very slippery conditions when the roads freeze.
There was 5cm of powder overnight and weather is currently sunny with no wind. As with the roads, conditions on the mountain are really warm. Reports are the snow has gotten quite heavy and there are a few people with very tired legs because of this. |

It snowed about 5cm over the last several hours, but what is really impressive is the sharp warm up we're seeing. The temperature rose from -14 to -3 overnight, bringing us the warmest day we've had in at least a week. With plenty of fresh snow bolstering all the runs (and it is not forecasted to stop for the next few hours yet) and temperatures so mild you can enjoy being on a ski lift without freezing, today is an excellent day to be out on the mountain. It should stay relatively mild throughout the evening hours, with light snow tapering off to flurries and ending in cloudy skies for the remainder of the night. The only complaint one might possibly have about the weather conditions today would be the wind, which has been whipping around rather forcefully since around 5am this morning.

Regrettably, the 20cm of snow never materialized. We got a few centimeters to be sure, which should freshen up the runs a bit, and make all the cars and roofs blend back in to one very long, white blanket, but it was not the significant snow that we had hoped for. Though there are a few flurries finding their way through the clouds right now, today promises to be mostly cloudy and cold, with little precipitation until the wee early morning hours. After this past week's consistent round of -20 low temperatures, I can hardly believe we were breaking the freezing mark only the week before. Next week should see a bit of a spike as far as warming goes. Not exactly spring-time conditions, but it will be a welcome break from mornings so cold that my car won't start.
Right now the winds are relatively calm, so perhaps you won't feel the -14 chill on your face so much. Today promises the same great runs as always, but please make sure to bundle up and wear a face mask if you can get your hands on one. If you find the cold to be a bit much, there is also a japanese cultural event being held up on the top floor of the Kitanomine Terminal from 6:30 - 8:30 tonight. Fans of bamboo flutes, lion dances, and food in general should not miss out.

If you were up early this morning you may have seen a beautiful pink and blue sky over Mt Tokachidake across the valley. Once again we are looking at a very cold day with the temperature in the village this morning at -15deg. Apprently sales of face masks have been strong over the last few days - which does not surpirse me. The forecast is for snow today, and depending on where you get the information from it could be up to 20cm. That would certainly be a nice way to start the weekend.

While there has been no new snow overnight the cold weather continues. At 9pm last night the temperature reached -20deg in Kitanomine village. This morning it is a much more reasonable -16deg. The mountain is looking awesome this morning having been extensively groomed. Expect the snow to be in great condition with these consistenly cold temperatures. The forecast is predicting substantial snow in Hokkaido today - lets hope that comes to be. Giant Course will remain closed for ski competition through until Feb 7.

There has been 2cm of snow in the village overnight and about 5cm on the mountain itself. This morning was bitterly cold at -15deg. If ever the was an incentive to ski slower to reduce the effective wind chill on yourself, then this morning was it. After a couple of runs on a chair I decided the only way forward was to use the Gondola or Ropeway. Early morning visibility was a little compromised with low light, but by mid morning the sun broke through, warmed things up considerably and the blue sky came out. All in all a great day to be out on the mountain. Happy carving.
